The Heat Assign Three to ECHL
It doesn't look like a Fata...yet.
But according to the HEAT's face book page and web site, they've assigned three players.
D Josh Meyers
FW J.D. Watt
G David Shantz

If a MOD could alter the title to say Assign instead of Assing, that would be awesome.
Surprising that Shantz is in the ECHL after his training camp. Odd to see JD Watt down there too. Lots of people on the board were pretty high on him.

JD looked horrible last year. Much more of a physical presence. He is not as good as he is on NHL10 I can tell you that much.

More likely for shantz is he will get more playing time in the ECHL then backup for Irving in the AHL. thats the consensus i've seen so far

Certainly didn't need all three of Grantham, Vandermeer and Watt. Wonder if it is a fitness issue for Watt. That is why he had a fifth year in junior.

i honestly wonder what the point of vandermeer is? i know he is a crazy *** fighter that can take on anyone in the league, but with decently good young tough guys like watt and grantham, why keep him? especially with big brother gone, he seems more expendable.

From what I have read and heard, Vandermeer is quite the leader in that dressing room actually. I would have been surprised to see him go. A lot of the younger guys going to Abbotsford have commented on the support he has shown them.
Some selfish-self promotion. I called Meyers and Shantz, but was way out to lunch on Watt in the other thread...

I sort of enjoy seeing a thread with the word assing. It could become a new word, like Roberto Luongo got a serious assing in the second period of his last start.

Vandermeer was brought in to help bring along the younger guys on the farm. From what I've heard he's got history with the Sutter clan, and will probably be with the organization on some level when his playing days are up.

Can't say I'd be disappointed if he never came close to the NHL.
Is Shantz going to Utah, or to Victoria? Didn't we have an agreement to send a goalie to the Salmon Kings?

The other goalie, John Murray, played a total of 27 games last year between Syracuse (AHL), Ontario (ECHL) and Mississippi (ECHL). He had a GAA near 3. Shantz played more and had a slightly better record, so I'd imagine he'll get a shot.

The Heat are a real young team; He's there for leadership. Sounds like a real character guy and a Sutter type

"For all the guys here, myself included, the end goal is to get back to the NHL," said Vandermeer, who suited up for two games with the Phoenix Coyotes in 2007-08. "But realistically, I'm an older guy, and my chances of that are on the outside. It's my job to help these guys to there, and make sure they feel comfortable at the rink and away from the rink so they can do what they need to do.
"Would I like to play in the NHL again? Absolutely. I got my little taste of it, and I enjoyed it. It's something every kid dreams of growing up. But every time I help one of these guys get there, it's a pat on my back, I think."

"It's very important for us to get out in the community, and not just expect people to come and watch us because we're here," he said. "We have to be a positive influence, whether it's at schools or minor hockey practices, places we can pass on good information and be positive role models.
"It's (the fans') hard-earned bucks they've got to spend in order for us to have jobs, and if we don't realize that, we're pretty stupid."
