Connect BB to home network
So I have a tech question for the CP guru's.
Background:
My brother just got a BB Curve 9300 and when I was over there on the 25th, I connected him to the home wi-fi. I have never connected a BB to a wi-fi network before and figured it would be exactly the same as connecting any wireless device (ie: set the router password on the device and bob's your uncle).
This didn't seem to be the case, as the only way the Curve was able to connect to the router was to have the BB generate a key, type that key into the router admin page in the Wi-Fi protected set-up area. That seemed to work fine, but my parents called and said that the other wireless devices (iMac and iPad) are no longer able to connect wireless to the network anymore.
Needless to say this is a bit of an issue. In reading the BB docs for the 9300, and reading up on WPS this seems to the standard. So questions are as follows:
1) Is there any way to set the passcode to the router on the BB so it doesn't have to generate a key that I have give the router? (router is using WPA-2)
2) If I have to use this protected setup stuff, what do I have to do so that other wireless devices that want to connect to the router don't get locked out?
Thanks for your help.

No issue with my BB and any keys...as expected, just set it up like you would on any wifi device.
Now I am on BIS. Maybe if he is on BES, there is an admin profile/security check setup by his company that force the device to ask for a key when connecting to wifi.

it's just a personal BB that he got for free from telus. Maybe there is something I am missing in this. I have never owned a BB, and started off with the iPhone.
What's the difference between BES and BIS? I wonder if it is refurbished one that he got that may still have settings from the previous owner?
I am going back there soonish to see if I can figure it out. But thanks for your help.

Can you not do it the good old fashioned way of just typing in the WEP/WPA password on the BB to connect to the network? Then just reconnect the other devices as well the old way

That's the way I thought it would work. I gave it the SSID (name of the network) and typed the password for the router, it didn't seem to take. Unless the name is case sensitive, that may be where I messed up. I am going to give it another go either today or tomorrow.

From my experience connecting my BB to different Wifi networks it depends on your router. I know with my BB, at home i used to have WEP security and although my BB would connect, it wouldn't get an ip, then i switched it to WPA and it works great.,
That pin code that you mentioned, it depends on your router, the newer router requires for you to input that pin for it to connect properly. On old routers you can just type in your password and you connect and your done.
I have a new router at work (dlink) and it asked me for the pin, so once you connect, you can go to a computer and login to your router. I believe for dlink its 192.168.0.1 (i think) and then you login with you username password, and on the first page i think theres a area for you to put that pin in, and once in it connects right away. If not you might have to click the wireless tab and it should be on that page.
Good luck hope that helps!
Oh and i don't think there is a way for you to change it so that you don't have to put in that passcode, its set in the routers software, or well atleast i never found a way and just went and put in the pin.

i wonder if there are existing settings on the bb? for example, when i see free i think refurbished, and when i think refurbished i think previous settings; it's simple...but that's me.
i know that the tech guys in the office have a real problem with letting people add their bbs to wireless networks, but the iphones seem to just hit the wireless and be fine.
the end of RIM won't be apple; it will be the bberry itself.

A couple of things that you may or may not have tried already.
Make sure your SSID is discoverable in your router settings.
Make sure you have MAC filtering off while trying to set this up.
If available, try using push button setup(WPS). Then you can't make a mistake.
I'm guessing that you accidentally changed the pre-shared key on the router so the other devices won't connect.

I figured it out. The SSID needed to be case sensitive. I did that, entered in the pre-shared key and everything worked just fine.
Still, I am curious as to why when I initially did this and set it up with WPS, the other wireless devices couldn't connect to the network. I didn't change any other settings on the router, I just added the PIN generated by my brothers BB to router.
So I guess it was just ID 10 T error on my part
Thanks for all the suggestions though.
