The Pittsburgh Penguins open up the 2009-10 season at home against longtime rival Washington Capitals. The Pens have a totally new looking roster then the one that walked off the ice after a 2nd round playoff sweep last season. The Pens have went with a very veteran blue line this season and have added a lot of youth up front. The biggest change in the team is between the pipes as the Pens will see great depth with starter Henrik Lundqvist being backed up by rookie Carey Price.
The Pens have set a goal this year of gaining home ice advantage in round 1 of the playoffs. Something the team is yet to do under current management. This year the team has decided to give the leadership roles to all the veterans to take the pressure off the youth.
The Alternates
BIG Z will be expected to be a tower of power for the Pens this season.
Koivu will provide a leadership figure to all the young forwards who will be expected to produce.
The Captain
Andrei Markov will be expected to regain his form from 2 seasons ago where he was named the best defenseman in the CPHL!
