2016 Summer Olympics not going to Chicago.
Chicago has been eliminated in the first rd of voting.
Down to Rio, Tokyo and Madrid now.
Tokyo now eliminated.

My guess is that it will go to Rio. I would support that bid.

Wow. That's too bad. Chicago would have been awesome. I'll be curious to see the rationale. Perhaps Obama modifying one of his canned campaign speeches for the IOC about hope and change?
I'm sure Illinois politicians are heartbroken as that was going to be a cash cow to embezzle the s*** out of.
Madrid, for me.

I think it goes to Rio for the simple fact that South America has never had the games on that continent before.

living in Illinois, and knowing how awful and messed up the state finances are, I have mixed feeling about this loss. It likely saves us taxpayers a lot of money in the end

Exactly what I'm thinking too. Their bid plan isn't all that bad, either.
The picture in this story from the Chicago news outlets has some of the best shocked expression faces I've ever seen.
Darryl Sutter can do whatever he wants.
Barack Obama cannot.

Rio wins!
It's a very political process within the ICO community.
Madrid has 89 year old Samaranch make a wonderful speech.
Rio had former FIFA president Havalange and Pele make speeches.
Chicago had Oprah? WTH the Oprah have to do with Olympic sport?
Obama attending is fine, all the leaders did.
I mentioned in the Random Thoughts thread a few days ago that I thought the Rio presentation and planning was absolutely breathtaking.

I think you're right about Oprah being a bad choice. One of the links earlier on this thread has people blaming Jordan for declining to be part of the bid, but given his recent angry hall of fame induction speech, I don't think that would have been a plus, either. Besides, with everyone boosting the bid (even the president) from Chicago, it doesn't have enough of a national angle to it. The bid never really felt larger than the state of Illinois, while the other bids always felt like national bids.

Agreed. It's a sporting event. The Chicago bid had to much of a political feel to it. Why is the First Lady even there let alone speaking? IOC doesn't want to hear that.

Yup 1992... would have been 24 years apart.
It's weird that Vancouver got the 2010 Olympics, considering Calgary had it not that long ago (22 years).
Chicago shouldn't have gotten it considering Atlanta was in 1996 (20 years ago).

I consider Summer and Winter to be quite different. Only 1/2 if that of the world can host a Winter Olympics, any major city could host the Summer Olympics.
Especially when Tokyo and Chicago are involved.

There are less countries capable for the Winter Games so it may come to Canada more often like every 22 years.
US had the olympics in 1980 (winter) 84 and 96. I think the IOC has had enough of them
