Ducks trade for Schneider

The Ducks continue the push to be an elite team as they dealt for veteran D-man Matthew Schneider. Here is how the deal looks:

To the Ducks:
Matt Schneider

To the Devils:
Thomas McCollum

Schneider will being a 67OV and overall solid ratings to stabilize our 3rd pairing and potentially step up to our top 4 to fill in for injuries. McCollum is a good young goalie prospect taken late in the 1st round. It sucks to lose him but we felt he was tradeable for 2 reasons. First he is a goalie prospect and those tend to take a looong time to develop. Second, we have a young core of goalies with Irving, Keetley, Shantz, Varlamov and Neuvirth so we don't have to worry about that area of the organization much.

Solid deal all around IMO...Ducks add a good veteran defenseman and the Devils nab a decent prospect for an aging UFA acquisition.

Not any more, because the Devils also sent D Nathan Oystrick and a 2011 3rd for Marek Malik, Florida's 2nd in 2010, and Charles-Olivier Roussel. We also received 3M in cap this year and a little over 1M in cap next year.

That's some solid asset management for the Devils. Oystrick and Schnieder were both free agent signings, and the Devils have the cap space to release Malik at the end of the year...so they got some solid prospects for free essentially.

The move makes sense for both the Avs and Ducks; the deals work all-around.
