Child car seats?
I have 2 Eddie Bauer child car seats that are approx. 7 yrs. old.
They were last used about 3-4 years ago.
I'm wondering if these would meet todays standards?....or should
I just throw them out?
...I'd love to give these to someone who can use them because they are
in great shape, But not if they no longer meet requirements.
Any help/suggestions would be awesome.

I think the expiry date for child car seats in Canada is 5 years.

Depends on the model. You're either good for 6 or 8 years with the eddie bauer line.

Even if they are good or not, don't plan on giving them to an organization (Goodwill or Women in Need) I'm pretty sur ethey won't take them because they can't confirm if they've been in an accident or not... you can call them to make sure though.
That is a nice thought

Yeah as other have said car seats have an expiry date on them. You should be able to find it on the sticker somewhere on the seat.
My parents in law were in the US a couple months ago and they bought 2 Eddie Bauer car seats for my son and my nephew. When they got to the border they informed the customs offcer they purchased them and they weren't allowed to bring them into Canada. Apparently that model they purchased doesn't meet the Canadian standards. I guess Canada has some very strict standards on child car seats.
Not saying your seats don't meet the standards, it's just they purchased Eddie Bauer ones as well which was surprising they couldn't bring them to Canada.

There were a few models of Eddie Bauer seats recalled last year.

Thank you ALL.
I will conclude that these should be destroyed as they are at least 7 years old. I'll cut all the belts and make them useless so that nobody can attempt to use them.
Charity is one thing, But a false sense of security/safety for a needy parent is something I won't contribute to.

I was the recipient of a 9 year old Eddie Bauer car seat as a hand-me-down. But yeah... it was expired. So we just had to junk it. Seems like a bit of a waste/scam by the carseat manufacturers, but I'm not really going to be the one to take a chance and use an expired one, just in case.

I remember hearing from our pre-natal class, that Canadian approved car seats are not allowed for use or sale in the USA (I'm sure you can use it if you're travelling from Canada though), because they haven't been approved in the USA, even though the Canadians standards far surpass the American standards... at least back in 2005.
I think a part of the car seats expiring is more to do with legislation than to do with the manufacturers, but I doubt the manufacturers would complain about a legislation that would see them having to sell more of their products.
I've seen people using old car seats that I'm certain is much older than 5 years. They're probably safe to use, but when looking after the safety of my kids, I'd rather take all precautions that I can.

The car seats expire because the plastic will get more brittle with age, and also because of the stresses put on the units. Maybe car seats would last longer than specified, I'm sure they do, but its like using an expired propane tank - why would you take that chance, when they aren't that expensive in the first place. (and a car seat made to last longer would cost more, and you only need them for a few years anyways...)
