Default Macbook Pro CD drive help

Now, before this devolves into a PC vs. Mac battle, you think you could help me troubleshoot my computer a bit?

Basically, I bought this thing new last June, and a couple months ago I started to have some issues with my cd drive. The computer will take a cd, spin it for a bit, but won't mount an image...so I can't access any info on any cd's. It hasn't been an issue for me since I hardly ever use the thing, but I need it now...any ideas how to fix this?

I had a similar (or maybe even the same?) issue, ended up just being a defective drive.

If you bought it in June, it should still be under warranty. Presuming you're here in Calgary, make an appointment to take it into the Apple Store and they'll diagnose & repair it for you.

I had a similar problem, too. My laser was dirty and I bought a laser cleaning kit - fixed it!

Okay cool...where would I get my hands on one of those? I'd rather do that then pay to get it diagnosed...I'm pretty sure my warranty is up since I don't remember buying the Apple Care thing.

Standard out-of-the-box AppleCare is one year for hardware issues. If you bought it last June, then you're covered until June 2010. If, when you said "last June," you meant June 2008, then you're on your own.

Jesus my summer flew by....either that or I suck at calendars. I meant last, last June...The June of twenty-aught-eight.

I'd still make an appointment with a Genius at the mac store. They won't charge you anything to take a look and they might even offer to replace it. After our hard drive stopped working, I took it in and they offered to replace it for free, even though the 1 year was up.

Was that for a seagate drive in a white and/or black macbook or Mini, by any chance? If so, that replacement occurred because there was a batch of hard drives that had a problem with the read/write heads detaching. I've seen it happen to at least 3 machines, one of which was my Mac Mini.

The optical drives in Mac laptops are problematic - I dunno why, but they just seem to be more finicky that conventional tray load units. Hopefully a cleaning is all this one needs.
