Car Insurance
I know there has been threads on this before but i searched and couldnt find them. I am paying through the ass for insurance. I have never been in an accident and have had 3 speeding tickets in the last 3 years (the latest one occuring in june of 07). Wondering if anyone has any insight on where to go for insurance. Thanks!

What are you paying and how old are you.
I am under 30 and I pay 1170 a year for full coverage.
EDIT: 2003 vehicle, living in Calgary, similar situation as you, no infractions in last 2 years, 3 total and 2 of those happened before I turned 18

I am turning 20 in 2 weeks. I havent had a ticket since i was 17. I lease a 2008 Nissan Versa ($200/mth) and I currently pay $480/mth in insurance. Im getting effed somewhere. I just dont understand how i can be paying more to insure my car than I am for the car itself.

They give wicked discounts for certain post secondary alumni. I get a discount for SAIT. Plus an even greater discount for having my home insurance through them.
I know I'm a broken record when it comes to pimping Meloche, but honestly, they're awesome. I once wrote a car off and they were spectacular. I dodged a deer on the highway and went off the road and killed my Impala. The adjuster told me I was hooped because I didn't hit the deer and therefore could not prove that it was anything other than reckless driving. In response I lamented that it was pretty lame that I'd have been better off killing an animal just to save $16,000 and she agreed that that sucked, so she gave it to me anyway.
Trust me, they're the best. I'll never go anywhere else because their service is top notch, their rates are either the best or at least very close and if you ever have to go to their office to pick up a $16,000 cheque, the girls that work there are hot.
Meloche FTW.

Quoted for truth.
I asked around to a few other insurers a couple years ago. When I heard the "reduce your rates by as much as 30%" ads. When I told them I was using TD Meloche Monnex they said they couldn't beat their rate.

You get screwed in Alberta.
When I talked to my insuruer - Wawanesa - they informed me that I would pay about 20% more insurance for a vehicle if I didnt own it.

I'm glad to hear you've had a positive experience with them. I was an MRC alumni so I got a good rate and then like you got a better rate when I moved my house insurance over to them too.
They're so much cheaper and friendlier than my last insurance company that I figured there had to be a catch and I assumed that catch would be when I tried to make a claim... which I've never done with them in like 5 years.
MM also gives really decent rate discounts if you don't make a claim with them for a given period of time where as my old insurance company would just increase my rates for no apparent reason.
Edit: I pay $86 a month for full coverage... I can't even fathom paying $480 a month.

When I was shopping around I found Canadian Direct was the cheapest; assuming you don't qualify for Meloche Monnex.

My girlfriend works there, FTW!
I am now considering changing jobs and selling my car (I use my car for work), I am paying almost $5000 a year for insurance with a $850.00 monthly car payment. It isn't worth it. The reason why I pay so much is because of 2 at fault accidents in the past 7 years. I drive almost 100,000 kms a year.

They said statistics indicate that if you dont own it, you wont treat it as good as something you owned.
I was considering leasing a vehicle last year and this prompted me to stay with my current vehicle until I can afford to purchase what I want. And I want to put at least 1/2 down so I need 15k saved.

I can somewhat see that, maybe other places do that. Where I work we look at driving record and type of vehicle only.

I miss my UK insurance rate of 98 pounds a year (about $160) - it was a BIG shock coming to Canada when we saw how much insurance is and that was even finding an insurer that recognised my 35 year clean driving record and no claims bonuses (not even 1 speeding ticket). I suppose it is the litigious nature that causes the high rates here?

I always wondered who'd win in a fight between a deer and an impala
To reinforce the landslide, Meloche simply owns everybody else. When my wife and I went to buy our first car together my insurance company kindly upped our rates by $2000 per year. The reason was apparently because my wife is a transplanted BC resident, she had no driving record in Alberta, thus she started at the bottom of the totem pole. I freaked out as we did not have an extra 2 grand laying around. I called around and got similar quotes from everybody.
Then I called Meloche. They gave me a quote that covered both myself and my wife as primary drivers. It was $500 less than what I had been paying ... for myself. In summary, our vehicle got 10 years newer, our policy went down by $500 and we added a primary driver with no Alberta driving record. I had to clarify so many times with the rep that she was laughing at me by the end. I immediately canceled all my other insurance and went with them.

How is Meloche to deal with claims? That is why I am with Wawanesa, becuase of claims history with my parents.
My dad hit a deer in his Expidition near Edmonton, totalled the front end and did frame damange, Wawanesa replced the vehicle with only a $1000 deductible paid.
They also gave him the option of getting a different vehicle for what the book value of it was. It was only 2 years old when it happened.

They great about claims. As I mentioned before, I wrote off a car throuhg them and it was no problem. My rates didn't even change (I don't know why, but I wasn't about to ask them).
Also, I had to claim through them another time. About 5 years ago, a buddy (who I had converted to Meloche about 6 months prior) rear ended my truck pretty bad. His car was a write off and my truck had about $2000 worth of damage, plus my neck stiffened up pretty badly and I needed physio. Meloche just did it. No fooling around, no bullsh1t. They didn't even give us grief that we just happened to be friends and we crashed into each other. No insinuations of fraud or anything. They just took the report, filed the claim, paid for my truck, paid for his car... Just no problem.
Meloche is seriously the best insurance company ever. And FTR, Wawanesa sucks balls.
