Oh, wait, I get it now. Send Ed a message. nice
And Avalon Roberts? Really? Isn't she tired of being the Liberal party's sacrificial lamb yet?

Well, in terms of sending a message, Calgary Elbow had a by-election to replace Ralph Klein. People were angry with Ed, so they elected a liberal (Craig Cheffins). That 'message' they sent lasted only until the next general election when the riding was again Tory blue.
So even if Calgary Glenmore does send a message, don't read too deeply into it.

I hope Diane Colley-Urquart wins. Been a good alderman for my area.

Agreed. If I was in the riding, I would probably vote WRA, and do hope they win, because it would be nice if this by-election could be used to let Ed know he has to make some changes.
But if the Tories have to win, Colley-Urquart is a pretty good choice for a candidate.

This will be a fun 2 horse race to watch, and very hard to predict.
I'll be rooting for Hinman. The PC's have too much of a majority and are ing this province up. I haven't been this anti-provincial PC since the Getty years (man, that guy coasted through).
Hinman's election would help wake the Tory back benchers up and get them vocal like they should be.
Stelmach's honeymoon is over, its time to get down to business.

Of course his honeymoon is over. He's been on the job for more than half his first term!

How do you figure that? He was re-elected just last year. He doesn't have to call a general election until 2012... he can even push it into 2013.

Sorry. I meant that he's been in the position of Premier for over two years.
I didn't think you got a honeymoon period in your second term.

Funny. I think I follow politics pretty closely and can't think of anything that she has done? I'm in her riding and every newsletter she sends seems to show nothing of note either.
What kind of message does electing the WRA send to Ed? Last time the Liberals won in Elbow we suddenly got some representation in the cabinet...that is definitely the kind of message I would want sent. Somehow I can't see electing someone from Taber in that riding having the same impact, specifically when they won't even be recognized as an official party in the legislature.

OMG you're right...
I'm not kidding. I don't really think she's done much as an alderman, which is one reason I am glad to see her gone. Not to be rude to her, but I recall a few years ago her spouting off in the newspaper about some homeless situation downtown and how we had to fix it. Um, where is your ward? Last time I checked, it wasn't downtown. I understand the spirit of cooperation, but a suburb alderman should not headline a homelessness program. It drives me nuts. Do something for the ward rather than political posturing.
Anyway, I think she is a good conservative who will fit into the provincial scheme of things very well. Plus, what's to say she won't return and run for mayor in a year when Dave gets even lower in the public eye (dislike the mayor too).
Too bad ward 13 couldn't have correct representation. I'd run, if I had election money.

I think it varies from person to person, but an overall common thread is that most don't like the direction he has (and is) taking us.

I think any change will be an eyeopener to the PC's that the climate has changed since the General Election.

Paul grew up in Haysboro and he moved back to Calgary shortly after last years election... ironically to Calgary - Glenmore.

You need 4 to receive recognized as an official party. So the ND's aren't, nor is Guy Boutilier. You can still represent and address your constituents needs; a huge percentage of that is done outside the confined walls of the dome.

Diane is only a conservative when it suits her political agenda. She sure was vocal against that bridge, but had no problem suggesting the city buy a golf course so that some of her constituents could maintain their view. She's one of the biggest hypocrites on the council.

Personally, I think it would send a bigger message than electing the Liberals would.
Lose the seat to Roberts, and the PCs might consider it just a case of centrist voters switching over, perhaps as a one time thing as noted in a previous by-election in the last legislature.
Lose a seat to the WRA, and it would be a sign that the PCs are bleeding support in multiple directions. Because if the more conservative voters are moving away, they can also be certain the moderates will be moving as well.

FYI.... here is a picture of the riding
This riding covers the mid south west portion of Calgary and contains the neighborhoods of Palliser, Pump Hill, Oakridge, Bayview, Southwood, Haysboro, Braeside and Cedarbrae.
If I lived in this riding I'd vote for Diane Colley-Urquhart.

My favorite is that Diane is busy campaigning for the provincial by-election while collecting her paycheque from the city...

I don't see a problem with that unless it interferes with performing her duties as an alderman (alderwoman?).
If you decided to run for election, would you quit your job before you were actually elected? I doubt it. There aren't many of us who could afford to do that... just the very wealthy.
