I mean aside from his hockey experience, what possible qualifications could he possibly have? I really wonder what he will do in Parliament Hill, this Senate nomination was completely unexpected.

...at least when he says that he "can't understand the wording of the bill" we'll know he means it.

Seriously, good for him. Better a regular guy in the Upper Chamber than another political hack.

Here's the TSN link, sorry for not posting it, only the RDS one was available on the internet for a little while.

lol, I was about to pile on Harper for naming an illiterate man to the post, but the story mentions that he has since learned to read.

That said, the Senate needs an overhaul. Senators should be elected on merit, not appointed to serve as "feel good stories", patronage assignments or to ram the governing party's agenda through.

If not for that last minute PP in Game 2, the Habs likely don't win the Cup that year and Demers probably never becomes a senator.

It will be very interesting to see what (if any) influence he has on Canadian politics in the future. It would certainly be one of those crazy stories if Marty McSorley's illegal curve in 1993 resulted in political ramifications decades later.

Speaker: Do you have any objections to the bill?

Demers: Yes. Can I get the bill in audio cassette form?
