HEAVEY LE"CAVLIER" SAVE OILERS FROM SHAME
Hat trick saves Oilers from another embarassing loss to Hawks
Well if you've seen the last Samurai, you know all about paper mismatches. On army is loaded with the latest technology in armaments. The other is a traditional squad that believes in custom and honor. Surprisingly the latter takes it to the former despite being outmatched in the eyes of many...only to have the cheating Japanese army bring out the machine gun and waste them in the last battle.
The season series between the Oilers and Hawks has drawn many parallels to the plotline in the aforementioned movie. Despite looking like a complete mismatch on paper, the Hawks continue to give the Oilers fits, and it's only by a very schorn schrotum that the Oilers escaped todays game with a victory. The Hawks fired the first arrow only 1:29 into the game when Marc Savard fired his 20th of the season past Sebastien Caron. The Oilers answered with a powerplay marker from Jay Boumeester some 7 minutes later when he fired his 9th of the season poast a screened Andrew Raycroft. Late in the first the Hawks took advantage of a Tom Poti blowout, and Maxim Afinogenov cut in alone and roofed one over Caron to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead after one. But after Bobby Schmautz went off on an absolute tirade between periods it was Vincent Lecavalier who answered the call. First Lecavalier stripped Hawk defenceman Jordan Leopold of the puck and broke in alone on Andrew Raycroft to tie the game at 2. Than later in the frame Lecavalier was left alone in the slot and ripped home a Brendan Shanahan feed to put the Oilers ahead 3-2. The natural hat trick was complete when Alex Frolov drew Hawk defenders Leopold and Karpotsev to him, and dropped the puck to Lecavalier to walk in all alone. Mike Van Ryn did score a weak goal at the 11:40 mark to make it interesting but the Oilers prevailed.
Sebastien eggshell confidence Caron won for the first time in 3 outings, but again was pretty bad allowing 3 goals on 21 shots. Still Oiler GM Sylvanfan commented "Sebastiens role is to let Marty sit down and rest for awhile here. He was an overplayed man when he got here, and we're focusing on getting him prepared for the playoffs. Thankfully someone stepped up and saved us from that bad shame on home ice. Hopefully the boys pick up their socks and take the next one seriously."
