He says this is the first time he’s had trouble with his products, adding he’s seen Marmite and Ovaltine sold in other stores across Canada.
“We’ve been bringing Irn-Bru in since the very beginning,” Badger said, referring to a Scottish, caffeinated soft drink. “My understanding was we were importing legally. We’ve been declaring it through a customs broker and we’ve never had an issue until now.”
However, Irn-Bru contains the red food colouring Ponceau 4R, which is not on the CFIA’s approved list of food additives.
According to the CFIA's letter to Badger, Marmite, Ovaltine, Lucozade, Penguin Bars and Bovril "are enriched with vitamins and minerals” and therefore illegal.
I can almost rationalize the bureaucracy involved in finally getting word out to a relatively small business that some of the food products they sell are not approved in Canada, but Safeway sells Bovril. Presumably not a lot of it, but I saw it on a shelf only five days ago. If this is as big a deal as the CFIA made it appear to be to this businessman how is it that a large grocery chain selling the same thing hadn't already raised eyebrows?
I would say pickled walnuts, Kippers would be higher up the list.
Ya, that is the one. Most of my family is English so I grew up on English cooking, but never had a pork pie until 5 years ago or so. I will never forget my reaction when I tried one.
Anyone ever had a British pork pie? Probably the grossest thing I have eaten.
Blasphemy!

My favorite has to be "toad in the hole". True healthy British cuisine. My mum loves Marmite, I can't stand it.
Oh man. My English mother hasn't made that in years. Combining the battery goodness of Yorkshire pudding and the delicious greasiness of sausages? God damn. I need this right now.
