Investing in wine
Just wondering if there's anyone else out there doing this. I've been messing around with stocks the last while.....winning some, losing some, but after a recent trip to Kelowna I've really considered investing in large quantities of vino.
Pros:
a) it's not terribly expensive to do (unless you go nuts)
b) if it tanks in value at least you get to throw a party and get loaded
c) I feel safe with all that liquor around. I'll never be without!!
Cons:
None!
So does anyone else have any local or international favs they're hoarding? I just picked up some wines from these guys.....they're absolutely FANTASTIC
http://www.levieuxpin.ca/
I'd also highly recommend La Frenz Chardonnay or Port, but they're currently sold out. If anyone knows where I can get my hands on some I'd be all over it.

I, for one, respect your ability to keep wine. I buy a bottle every two days and drink half of it with dinner every night. I read somewhere that it was good for you. I'll probably live to be 100. Hopefully not.

Just make sure you keep it in a cool room or you'll be investing in vinegar.

Balsamic vinegar might be a good investment also.

Balsamic vinegar is an excellent investment. Just make sure it's from Modena and has no caramel. Best place for storage is on your salad, on it's way to your stomach. BTW, your stomach is also a great place to store wine.

I have a hard time believing that you manage to keep it to half a bottle with dinner.

i love wine, and started a small collection a few years ago. the centrepiece to my collection is a, diamond creek - volcanic hill 1996. i bought it 9 years ago for about $250. not sure if it has appreciated, but i was told it would age well, so at least it should taste good.

There is absolutely no way I could keep it for it's value...it just wouldnt happen. Knowing me I'd get blitzed one day and run out of booze and crack a $500 bottle of wine just to keep me rolling.

Well if I spent my whole night drinking wine, how the hell would I manage to consume beer? Can't neglect beer.

At the highest end, rare, super-premium wines are the most expensive of all food[citation needed], and outstanding vintages from the best vineyards may sell for thousands of dollars per bottle, though the broader term fine wine covers bottles typically retailing at over about $US 30-50.[41] "Investment wines" are considered by some to be Veblen goods—that is, goods for which demand increases instead of decreases as its price rises. The most common wines purchased for investment include those from Bordeaux, Burgundy, cult wines from Europe and elsewhere, and Vintage port. Characteristics of highly collectible wines include:- A proven track record of holding well over time
- A drinking window plateau (i.e., the period for maturity and approachability) that is many years long
- A consensus amongst experts as to the quality of the wines
- Rigorous production methods at every stage, including grape selection and appropriate barrel-ageing
Investment in fine wine has attracted fraudsters who prey on their victims' ignorance of this sector of the wine market. Wine fraudsters often work by charging excessively high prices for off-vintage or lower-status wines from famous wine regions, while claiming that they are offering a sound investment unaffected by economic cycles. Like any investment, proper research is essential before investing.

Yeah, I started my "collection" by buying a bottle or two from each vineyard I went to, then went home and drank it. Collecting was giving way to consumption.
I've fixed this by buying wines by the case. This way, after I've drank half of them I've found another brand I like, and I've saved half my purchase.
I like the way I think sometimes.

Two things worth considering (I have not bought wine to appreciate in value, so take my advice with a grain of salt).
1. Natural cork can screw things up. Even the finest wines are not immune to being spoiled from cork.
2.Temperature control in your storage area is key if you want your wines to last, like others have said.
That's my two cents. If you don't like my advice, wine about it!

What good is an expensive bottle of wine that sits on a shelf so that you can show it off to your friends?
