Vernon's house sells for $10.3M
Sets a record for a MLS listed house in Calgary.
http://www.calgaryherald.com/busines...920/story.html
Quote:
An Elbow Park home, which was owned by former Calgary Flames goaltender Mike Vernon, has sold for $10.3 million --setting the benchmark for the highest MLS residential sale price in Calgary.
It eclipsed the previous record sale in June 2008 of a six-bedroom Crescent Heights home which sold for $7.5 million.
"We're finding the real estate market to be quite strong right now," said Donna Rooney, one of the realtors who listed Vernon's property along the Elbow River. "This was not our one and only offer. We sold the property in a period of six weeks, which is consistent with what's going on in real estate.
"This is a real statement that things are pretty good in this city still. There is a lot of confidence in real estate."
The house was listed in early May at $10.5 million by Calgary realtors Rooney Cronin +Valentine.
Rooney said she can't disclose who the buyer is due to confidentiality reasons and said Vernon preferred not to publicly discuss the sale of his Elbow Park home.
The original listing described the home as a "Gracious Sandstone Estate Home privately nestled on a 10,000-square-foot lot along the banks of the Elbow River in coveted East Elbow Park.
"Custom built, completed just two years ago, this exceptional property offers 12,700 square feet of impeccably developed living space. Large gracious living (plus) entertaining rooms with wooden French doors that walk out to river vistas, private courtyards, formal lawns.
"Imported antique fireplaces, custom inlay hardwood, limestone(plus)marble floors."
"Interestingly enough, we had quite a lot of showings on it," said Gary Cronin. "It was basically one of our hottest listings during that period. And they were qualified showings. They were people who could afford to buy this home."

It is a really nice house. Our family friends live next door--I met Vernon at their Christmas Party a couple years ago--so I am sure this sale price is welcome news for them.

must be nice to be able to afford that.. I wonder how many 'unqualified' showings they had, or do they not even allow that?

Must be nice to have sold it. Those realtors made a killing selling that place. A cool 350K.

Is there any pics of the interior?
Vernon's made about $24M in his career. I wonder how much it cost him to build this mansion
Why did he sell anyway? He lives in BC now?

Maybe.
I think he also has a ranch in the Millarville area.

I am intrigued by what the home looks like on the inside. Homes like that must have a spectacular layout.

I thought my friends place at 7,200 sq ft was big. Add another 5,500 to that and that's just insane.

Maybe NHL009 sold his watch and snaped it up. He was a very successful businessman you know. Way more successful than anyone else here.

I think the rationalization of the huge spaces is exactly for entertaining. If you spend a few hundred grand on a room and then make a million dollar deal in that room through entertaining/networking, well, why not?
All this extra space isn't for "living", it's for showing wealth... well, and cleaning.

Apparently Vernon was very successful with that Bear mountain developement on the island. One of the few athletes that didn't seem to piss the money away and actually leveraged it into more money.

All of the above clearly demonstrates that you are of a different class than the likes of Michael Vernon. He probably shops at stores you have never heard of, eats food you have never tasted and has animals for pets that you didn't even know existed.

10.5 is the record? Is that just for a sale of a house? That Fracmaster house in pumphill has to be worth more than that.
