what toolbars or add ons do you have installed?
Right click my computer, go to manager, then event viewer than applications, it should give you a rough reason why. Also you dont have to do a hard reboot, ctrl+alt+del and then the iexplore.exe process and that will kill IE without having to reboot.
Also, is it any site in particular or just random sites sometimes work and sometimes dont? Its possible there is a Java or Flash conflit, make sure you have the latest of both installed.

I won't slam you, but I would think this is a great opportunity to give firefox a try. Take a look around some of the extensions for it and see if anything tickles your fancy. Download movies from webpages, block advertisements, shorten urls ... there's something in there for everybody.
Explorer has come a ways since 7.0, but it's always worth it to see what else is out there.

I may just follow Russic's advice and install Firefox. Is the transition difficult? I don't much like change. I did use it for a short while and there was an issue (I can't remember what it was) so I uninstalled it. I may give it another shot. Ha, I may also get a new laptop and this may be a good opportunity to get rid of IE forever. I may try a Mac but I think the learning curve is very steep and that scares me.

The transition shouldn't be too hard. I'm pretty sure you can pull your bookmarks in from IE. If you come across what issue was bothering you with Firefox before post it here. I find many times there are little problems there is an extension that can help.
If you're interested in trying a Mac out, I switched as well a couple years back and CP was a big help. There are many people here who can help you if you choose to go down that road.

If you're stuck on using IE, go back to version 7.

Not trying to be a "me too", but I'll agree that now is a great time to use Firefox. A few years ago there were some sites that didn't load quite as nicely with FF, but I haven't had any issues in quite a while.
Just get used to "favourites" becoming "bookmarks", but you shouldn't have any trouble adapting to that or any of the other slight differences.
I have also heard some really good things about Chrome, especially the speed and lightweight nature of it. I like the add-ons for Firefox though - there are so many neat things. You can even get different themes to make it look more like IE.
You should, however, try fixing IE anyway because, as mentioned, Windows Update relies on it. But I think that one of computers still has IE6 which works fine with the updating...
