Ok, so you're at a restraunt or pub or club...how much do you tip? do you tip at all?
For me, I reward good service, punish bad service. If the waitress/waiter is really good, she gets double the GST and then some...even if the food is average at best, she's the face of the company and it leaves a good impression, deserving some extra money - and likely future patronage.
If she's horrible (too long to come, very inattentive, too long to refill a drink/ask if we need anything [realizing it's relative to how busy it is]), she gets minimal tip - hopefully she'll see it as a hint that she needs to get better...even though I'm now less likely to return. She doesn't get punished for being too attentive, even though it can be annoying.

Avg service - double the GST.
Great service - 20%
Bad service - 10% (these people all work hard for largely minimal wages)
Really bad service - 5% and a note explaining why.

Id like to say I dont leave anything even for sh*tty service, but for some reason I always tip them anyway. I think I tip too much most of the time, like over 20% even if the service is meh. I really need to stop, cause some of these people should be giving ME money for their crappy ways of doing business.

Usually whatever rounds it off nicely, but around 15%. A dollar tip being minimum, like when I just go out for coffee. I usually don't go places that I haven't been before so I know most of the staff and thus don't get much bad service. But if I do happen to go some place out of the ordinary and get bad service they get nothing.

I used to tip regardless of whether the service was good/bad/indifferent. I have started leaving nothing for people who don't earn it. If you hate your job that much, get a new one. Good service gets 15-20. Mediocre or poor service get nothing.
One of my new pet peeves are all these fast food type places, coffee places, etc that have little tip jars.

I think I have to start using your policy habernac, its more alligned with what i believe in. but for some reason i still tip for sh*tty service, and that must change.
one thing i cant stand either is people expecting to be tipped for the stupidest crap, so i totally agree with your new pet peeve as well. pretty soon people will expect a tip for being able to draw in a breath of air.

One time I was with a group of friends at Limericks. the total bill came to around $120, and the service was awful. Rude waitress, laziness, incorrect orders, and the bill itself was even wrong. We payed about $130, so not a very good tip...but was still more than she deserved.
So we are sitting there finishing our beers, and she comes and counts the money in front of us, and then tells us that we don't have enough tip. WHO DOES THAT?! One of the people that was with us caved in and gave her more, but oh did that ever have me steamed. Tipping is something that is earned, not warranted.

ohhh, reminds me of a story. happened at Schanks North during the playoff run (Game 6 vs San Jose I believe). Had a horrible waitress - based on the circumstances, most people in our group drove, therefore wouldn't have alcohol, but still ordered (er, wanted to) a bunch of food. But, since we wouldn't order beer before the game, she 1) didn't come see us to get drinks very much at all, 2) didn't come see us if we wanted food at all. As well, we wanted a tab, so in order to do that, my buddy had to put down his credit card for security. In the end, had a bill over $100, and tipped her $15-20 bucks she didn't deserve.
Buddy's credit card bill comes back and there's a $10 charge. We were going there that night, so talked to the manager/the waitress in question. Her claim: we didn't pay the full amount AND didn't leave her a tip (we did, and had 3 people count to make sure)...thing is, if we didn't pay the full amount, it'd be off-priced and not exactly $10. Thinking she pocketed a bunch and tried to pin it on us.
I'd take that tip back if I could.

I agree with what you said calf, it's all about the service. The last time I ordered pizza for example, the guy was late, he didn't arrive with a smile or a "how are you?" He said nothing and was late, he was lucky to get the one dollar tip he got and then had the nerve to curse about it as he walked back to his car.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, when I was at my brother-in-law's bachelor party, we went to TGI Friday's in the Halifax Casino. The girl that served us was very nice and respectable and did a great job, especially when you consider she, a VERY attactive woman, was serving about 20 young males all close to her age. A few of whom had the nerve to drool over her and then not tip. Knowing some of my friends and how cheap they can be and based on her very prompt and polite service, I gave her a $20. Even with that, I doubt she got 10%.

I hate people that are too cheap to tip, but go out regardless. I don't care if you are a poor student...if you cannot afford to tip, you should not be going out.
That said, then if the service is horrible, then fine, don't leave a good tip. But if the service is good...suck it up and give a decent tip. Most of these people don't get paid very well and do rely on the tips, don't be an ass and say they should 'get better jobs' or something similar.
Unrealistic expectations on service really get on my nerves too...it is more than alright to expect good service, but to have unreachable expectations like "she didn't refill my water until 5 minutes after I was finished!" and use that as justification for not leaving a decent tip...not an excuse, you are just being cheap.
I am not aiming these comments based on anything I read above...just personal experience of having really really cheap friends. It made me dread going out with them, and made me poor by overcompensating for their cheapness.
(I usually tip 15-25% unless it is horrid horrid service. Only didn't leave a tip once in my life...went for sushi with my sister, weren't checked on for over 30-40 min...before we even ordered, and then again after we were done...blatantly ignoring us.)

I brought in my alcoholic summer's remnants to the bottle depot last fall. I walked out with something large, like 60 or 70 bucks. On my way out the building, guy mutters "Thanks for the tip".
I've never even heard of tipping at the bottle depot. Do you guys do it? Am I a cheap bas**rd?
As for restaurant service, every waitress starts out with a 20 - 25% tip that gets whittled down based on service. For the most part, the waitresses that know me, make a point of getting me my beer & wings ASAP, because they know they'll get a great tip.
The worst tip I ever gave was 23 cents. She didn't deserve the 23 cents, but I wasn't going to wait for change.
IMO, tip is earned through speed of initial contact, accuracy of order, and attentiveness. My biggest pet peeve is my beer glass sitting empty as I finish the wings. I don't expect her to stand there & wait for the glass to be empty, but I go nuts when she's standing at the bar smoking & chatting with the bartender & I'm thirsty.

No way would I tip at a bottle depot.. sheesh..
Ummm, 15% for decent service, if the girl makes me think she likes me 20%, 10% if she sucks.. Not sure if I've ever had bad enough service to warrant no tip, but by no means do I think it should be considered a guaranteed thing.
To whoever said "if you're to cheap to tip don't go out" bah that's a load of hogwash, who are you to say what people with various levels of disposable income are allowed to do.
If service people want a grnteed wage get a different job!!!! The good tips they often get out weight the bad, if they don't they're probably the one with a problem.
I die a little inside when I get served by a guy..
edit: I guess I don't mind being served by a guy in a really nice restraunt, but they usually have to be a bit older and sorta go with the atmoshpere..

Not all of them have much of a choice to get a different or better job. You are being pretty arrogant to think that all of them have the opportunity or ability to just get a decent wage "that easily."
Who am I to say what people can do with their disposable income? I can't really influence their choices, but I do believe that if you cannot afford to reward good service or choose not too, then no, you should not go out. By going out without tipping you are essentially abusing a system that is set up to reward those in the service industry that do a good job, and you are denying them the reward of doing a good job. Not to mention wasting their time as they might actually NEED that money to survive.

Well when I was in Toronto in a bar I was watching a Flames Game and the lady added the tip to my bill,
I asked why its so high even though it was beer and some wings. So she told me she added the tip to my bill. The service was so bad I didnt want to tip her. The wings I ordered came out cold and nasty so I ask them to get me some hot ones and she has that sigh and fine i'll do it.
Thats when im like **** this and just got them to go and left and went to my hotel to watch it.
