Default Rogers Internet stick

I've got a friend who lives out of town (farm near Chestermere), and they want to get internet, partly for the kids for school work and some email. They've got dial-up available, but I wonder if it would be worthwhile to look into using a Rogers internet stick.

As far as I know, it probably uses the 3G network, and I get full bars of reception on 3G with my iPhone when I'm out at their place.

Is it realistic to use the Rogers stick as an internet service outside the city?

Might be a bit costly, but they don't overcharge you when you use up a lot of bandwidth. At least they don't overcharge me.

Just to be clear- does your phone show full bars of 3G service? Not sure how it works on Rogers, but with Telus they have their "high speed" digital, and then their plain vanilla digital. At my cabin, my digital phone works for calls and text, but I can't surf on it- nor would a Telus internet stick work.

A friend at work lives out in the boonies and she uses Xplornet

When you said "a bit costly", I decided to check their prices and they are considerably more than what I pay now. We pay $44.95 a month for their high speed service. That is the price for signing a 3 year plan so I am a long term customer. We also purchased a static IP address which we pay a bit more for every month as well. My husband has some programs that require a lot of bandwidth and the static IP assures that bandwidth remains constant.

I have been a long time Platinum customer, excellent service, I think we are on about year 5 with them. When we signed up and took a 3 year service with them, the installation was included too. Not sure if that applies anymore either, but there was a 3 month time frame to get that offer when Platinum first introduced their service in my area.

The problem was that they initially had a 20gig download limit, but never really enforced it. So, instead of the lack of a cap, they decided to bump the prices a bit. Now you pay $60/month, IIRC....and you basically get service with 100% uptime and great customer support.

We've been with them for 4 years now....ever since they first came to Pincher Creek. The first year wasn't that great, but they did improve with time, and now we've basically had perfect internet for 2 years.

Same speed, same everything no matter what we download.

Unfortunately, Rogers just doesn't have the coverage area that Telus does. If you're looking for that type of thing for a rural area, you may be better off getting the stick from Telus. I think it's $30/month for 1GB of data.

Edit: Here's the link to check Rogers' coverage. Note that most places outside the city don't list 3G coverage.

Edit: Here's the link for Telus' coverage. Note that they have far more 3G coverage than Rogers.

Maybe try this:

Wireless rural internet access has come a long way. Its a lot more reliable than it used to be.

I wonder when the monthly fees increased to the prices they now quote on line? I just renewed with them and took out another 3 year term with them last June, and I got the $44.95 price then. And going yearly would not have cost what they quote on line now.

Anyhow, the product is great, as is customer service.

Far as I know, the existing customers won't get charged more.

Especially if you've been with them as long as we have.
