While I sympathise, if they were to try and wait for a time that was good for everyone then they would never get anything done.

I'm with bobblehead on this one.
The bylaw says the can start at 7:00 so there's not much you can do.
That being said, if I was having a backhoe in to do work on my house, I'd probably have told my neighbours ahead of time. So that's kind of a dick move on his part to not let you know.

I think they could have been a little more reasonable and done some other stuff until about 9 or so. I'm sure my neighbors wouldn't appreciate it if I blasted some metal at 7:00am on the dot with speakers pointed at their house.
I hear what you're saying, and I agree their within their rights etc etc, but I think a little courtesy would be appreciated. Like, just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

due to work/kids, I don't think I've slept past 7am in about 4 years.
That said, I know I wouldn't be happy if that was happening next to my house.

Be glad it's Monday, not a Saturday or Sunday when people are typically sleeping in.
Monday is a typical workday, almost everyone I know is up and getting ready for work by then.

You have to keep in mind as well, that most of the trades start their work at those hours, pretty standard in the business. I think the bylaw reflects that.
If you ask one trade, like the backhoe guy to start later, you probably hold up another trade that was to do their work once the backhoe guy was done.

Actually your neighbor is being sensible not to do any work on the weekend mornings. I absolutely hate my neighbor who likes to start their lawn mower at like 6:30 on Saturday mornings, and have the balls to come over to tell us to tone down our patio BBQ gatherings at 9pm!!!

On last Saturday I went home quickly from camping to get my inhaler and some other stuff I forgot. It was 7:30am and they were out working on the back alley with heavy machinery scraping it to resurface the gravel. I woulda been pissed if I was home and sleeping, but on a monday not much you can do, garbage and recycle bin trucks come around 715-730.

I live in a condo adjacent to construction and they start at 6:30am monday through saturdays. You get used to the sound of steel being dumped into a bin pretty quickly.

Lol. You officy types have no idea about the world of trades and machine operation. By the time you roll into the Starbucks drive thru at 7 or 8, any respectable tradesman is already at his site with his tools unloaded and ready to go. Seven o clock hits and the machines fire up. What you were hoping they would do until nine was already done at 630.

7am on a Monday is about a million times better than 7am on a Saturday or Sunday.

I don't have a problem with trades starting up at 7am on a weekday. Weekend is a little bit different.

I have a good idea about trades people. I used to work blue-collar too, but I decided it wasn't for me.
I hate the attitude that most of them have, that their work is so important and that the world will end if their not done by such and such time. They seriously think their so righteous in what they're doing for whatever reason.
I remember when I was drywalling for a while before I went to college, and no one gave a crap about the other trades. Electricians would bitch about plumbers, framers would frame crap so lazily, we would come in, pretty well at the bottom of the totem pole, and have to fix the crap they left behind.
I don't really care who you are or what you do, why do you need to be earthquake loud the second the clock says 7:00am? You know you're in a residential area, can you not wait and do something less noisy? There's always SOMETHING to be done.

The habit of starting early probably has it's origins in needing every possible hour of sunlight, and now it's just industry norm. You should be thankful that trades are already at work by the time you get up otherwise rush hour would be twice as bad.
And drywalling is not a trade. My mother could drywall.

8:00 am is too late to get up on a weekday anyway. You should go over and thank those trades people for getting you out of bed. 9am is way too late to start work. The morning is already half over by 9am.
