I always spend as little time as possible in Zellers, WalMart etc so I'd do anything to avoid having to go back.

Yes, it's the right thing to do.
Would I go back? I plead the 5th.

They can't dock the cashier because they won't know the item is missing until they do inventory. The cashier has nothing to worry about.
Enjoy your 75% off items!

He's right... on the other hand if there was a cash shortage, legally the employer is not allowed to dock wages (trust me, as an employer, I've wanted to)It's up to the employer to provide adequate training and make sure that the employee is capable of handling cash and dealing with Loss prevention issues.
Should you go back? Depends on how strong your conscience is....

I'd go to Zellers for you and return the vaseline in exchange for a Klondike bar

Do what your God would want you to do, or just forget about it. Mine tells me to drink rye, unfortunately the rye was not as good a deal as you got but it helps me forget.

I'd take it back, I've done it before. To me, it doesn't matter if its mom and dads grocery store or zellers, I've been undercharged and pointed it out, I've been overcharged and pointed it out, its all karma baby.
Of course, my dad was different, he switched pricing labels on a VCR at Canadian Tire once, just cause he had a beef with them over a bad car repair job.
He saved 100 bucks on a new vcr

I would return the one you didn't pay for to get a refund using the receipt of the other.

Why should you waste your time because the store can't hire competent staff? Time is money and why should you bear the cost of the store's error?

I know that most of these are joke responses, but honestly if it was myself, my conscience wouldn't allow me to keep it. I guess you have to figure out how things sit with you about keeping it, and decide what to do from there. Usually the rewards for honesty far outweigh dishonesty. There's something to be said for having a clear(ish) conscience.

Mmm... well I've had friends have to pay, but that is back in the olden days of horse and buggy when I was in university. Maybe the rules have changed. But certainly cashiers have been fired for large shortages. But as I said in my original post, that doesn't even apply in this case.

I'd go back. I have a guilty conscience, and felt bad once when I took two newspapers out of the box accidentally.
