Default Yoga

Anyone else tried it? On my current time off, I vowed to get more exercise, and yoga seems like a good way to relax and stretch and exercise all in one. There's a hot studio close by so I figured I'd take a noon class and see how I liked it.

Thoughts?

Yoga is great, but a lot depends on the type of yoga. For me, Ashtanga, or Power Yoga is good--I would never do hot Yoga--I hate being hot, and it focuses more on stretching than on strength.

It's a good workout. It really tests you physically in ways the gym doesn't. I highly recommend it.

I'm not very flexible so I sucked at Yoga. Hot Yoga was a bad experience because the place had carpet (which they no longer do) and having to be mere mm away from a stanky carpet was revolting. I'm sure it's something I could get into, but I'd be looking at it more from the relaxing side.

I don't know if you ventured into the p90x thread but there is a yoga routine that you do with the program. I find it to be extremely challenging, much harder than all the push-ups/pull-ups and really any other routine.

Ugh I cannot stand it, it's the only one I don't look forward to doing. I would much rather do the plyometrics routine three times in a row than one go at the yoga.

First time I ever did Power Yoga was with my girlfriend - I was sweating HARD after just 15 minutes.

Been doing it for a while now, and I am a LOT more flexible - I enjoy doing Yoga (I do the p90x version) and it still kicks my ass.

I personally love hot yoga. I would recommend Bodhi Tree Yoga in Kensington if you're thinking about trying it... best hot yoga classes I've ever been to.

I also like Ashtanga/Power yoga. There are more options for Ashtanga studioes/classes around the city that are good, IMO. I like going to the classes better than just doing yoga in my living room. I find the "atmosphere" is a big part of the relaxation and benefits for me.

For the record, pre-natal yoga is BORING. But it's probably not something most posters on here would be interested in anyways!!

The only yoga i've done is the p90x yoga like a lot of other people. It's great and it's really challenging. But it's totally worth doing, although sometimes I find it hard to do. I think basically because it's an hour and a half. If it were an hour then i'd probably do it more often. I love plyo. I'd probably do plyo 3 times in a row just because it's awesome. Actually, that's not true. If I go hard enough on plyo, it wears me out. But I love the progression I get from plyo. I can tell the difference after I do it for a month. I feel way better. I'd probably say that plyo is the best workout in p90x.

Now it's time for me to post in the p90x thread.

are a lot of those classes for beginners? I have been too intimidated to try classes because I've never done yoga and don't want to make a complete arse out of myself.

All you need to know as a beginner yogi is how to put your ego aside and not push yourself. Just cause the tiny 100 pound girl can do it doesn't mean you can to. In fact she's probably way stronger then you and it's probably 100% a result of yoga so you may as well get started.

The answer I got regarding when you're ready for intermediate yoga at my yoga studio was "as soon as you know how to practice within your limit". There is a LOT of poses you probably won't be able to do. Which is OK cause you'll get to rest more while everyone else is doing these!

As for yoga itself, do it! I started almost a year ago because of a bad back (2 herniated discs at 23, lame!) I've gone from barely being able to sit to snowboarding 40 times last winter and biking 3 times a week this summer. I attribute this almost entirely to Yoga! (and my now religious stretching routine but that's also largely based on yoga poses...)

before i tried yoga, i was ignorant and thought it was easy. wow, was i ever wrong. i do the p90x yoga once a week. i am currently starting week 6, and the yoga is one of my favourite days. i notice my flexibility and breathing really improving.

good luck with the yoga.

Well that first class kicked my ass, took my name and then kicked me again for good measure.

On the plus side the instructor is hot

Ok somewhat serious question: Is Yoga boring? I'm sort of thinking it might help.

Maybe boring if you're good at it, but I had a tough time keeping up.

And if you do get bored, check out the hot girls ass in front of you
