I'm looking to get out of the appartment I am currently renting in Red Deer, and looking at the option of renting out a Bach Pad. I don't know much about them other then them being one room, no walls, other than the washroom.

Anyone ever live in one, and would you reccomend them?

Are you a slob? If so, don't rent a bachelor pad. It's rather unpleasant to be able to see a sink full of dirty dishes from your bed, or a pile of dirty clothes behind the tv.

If you look after the place then go for it. If you smoke or are a slob or you like to entertain, don't.

Good advice RU.

I live in one right now, and I would say keeping the place clean is the number one priority. I am average in this dep't, so sometimes my place looks fine, and other times, like RU says, I have to clear things off of my bed so I can sleep.

Being organized also makes a difference. As for entertaining, I couldn't dream of having a party in my place. Also, prepare to sacrifice some things to save space. For example, I don't have a kitchen table. I have a study desk in the kitchen where the table used to be, and I eat there. Also, my computer doubles as my TV- I got one of those TV tuner cards or whatever. No couch either- my bed serves that purpose. I bought a bunch of pillows and at least this way I can force myself to make it eveyr morning once I get up (well, most of the time). Make sure you're good at putting at shelving- at least half of my stuff (CDs, kitchen supplies, books, clothes) are up on shelves to keep them off the floor.

What else. My place is really small, and I have 4 garbage cans. Makes it easier to keep things clean. And now that I think about it, if you lead a busy life (out of the apartment), a bachelor pad is fine. Otherwise you might go stir-crazy from a lack of space.

I'm a slob... there's no way around that...

Right now I have a 1 bedroom apt. overlooking the river in Red Deer. It's just under 600 sq. feet, and I pay about $1 per sq foot. I also get heat, water, and electricity included.

Sounds pretty cozy huh? Factor in a yappy little dog that barks at anything that moves, people skidooing on the river in this -20 degree weather, and I'm damn near on the other side of the city from my work. There's a bunch of places closer, and I'm just shopping out the area right now. Thought maybe a bach pad may be a condiseration, but it sounds like it may not be an option.

I've heard too many crappy stories about basement suites, and I'm bringing my puppy up here soon, so I have to find a place that lets me have a pet. Wish me luck.

Is this bachelor pad thingy also known as a loft?

I've never heard of a room like that..

Although no matter where I move to next it'll be a B-pad... since I'm a B.. (can't be bothered to learn to spell that word)

I live in a bachelor's apartment and it's fabulous! The way in which a bachelor's apartment is set-up is extremely important. The apartment I live in now is set-up so that I do basically have a room (even though there isn't a door) which is seperate from the rest of the apartment. For my place, I've put one of those shelving units which have no front or back side as a seperation between my "room" and the rest of the place, so I do essentially have a seperate room. The guys are right though, cleanliness is key in a bachelor's pad. Good luck!

Holy Crap!

Where the hell do you live?

I own a 1200 sq ft bungalow with a finished basement (so 2400 livable sq ft) and I pay $1600/month for my mortgage, property taxes and utilities all put together.

Really where do you live table 5?
I'll rent you a bedroom in my house and even knock off 10% your rent
(rubbing his hands greedily).
I guarentee no ski-doos on the bow too! And my dog only barks once or twice!
Ferucious sounding then he grabs his teddy bear and wags to the door. I don't think dogs like bachelor suites much though,Prottotype.

In essence a bachelor joint is where you live till you get too much stuff.
Think of it as a hotel room with a kitchen.Except you can't throw the bottles on the floor.

yep, I live in Manhattan, and not in a sort of trendy neighborhood either, its actually one of the cheaper areas of town called Yorkville.

How do i afford it? well I have a roomate to split costs with, even though the place is tiny and privacy is almost non-existent. But luckily for me my parents are helping out a little but sufice it to say its still very ghetto. I got my furniture off the street and don't really eat that well. haha.

the good news is it's a 6th-floor walkup, so i get exercise whether i like it or not.

going back to Calgary to my parents 2,000 square foot house is quite a nice change of pace....
