my optometrist doesn't charge me at all. I just call and order the contacts over the phone and come in and pay for them when they phone me to say they're in.

^ same here. I call 'em up, tell them I need more and pick them up.
In fact, I have NEVER had a contact "fitting fee" charged to my bill unless it's already factored into my appointment.

We had a thread awhile ago about ordering contacts online. Might be something you want to look into. Just search for the thread, you'll get lots of info.
(and I don't think your tags are appropriate, or if you feel that way, get a new optometrist. Perhaps CPs very own Hesla)

I order mine online. You just need to use the size and perscription for your old contacts. Mind you, this is assuming that you are getting the same and happy with your current brand/model/perscription of contacts.
The contacts are usually cheaper than going through an eye doctor, and arrive in a couple of days after ordering. I think a couple of the more popular sites are clearlycontacts.ca and visiondirect.ca
If you check on line for coupon codes you can usually find one that will give you an additional 10-15% off and or free shipping.

I thought my optometrist was doing this too, I had to come in to see how the contacts were before I could order. Didn't end up getting charged for it though, they just wanted to make sure the contacts fit well, gave good vision...ect. Might be time to switch optometrists, or order contacts online/at costco

If you are updating your prescription (ie expired or new types of lenses), it is perfectly normal for them to charge a fee. If your prescription is valid and you just want some lenses, that's a whole other story and they are ripping you off.

Costco and Wal-Mart are free.
A friend went to Wal-Mart asking for samples fitted and they were free as well.

Superstore is also free too. Can't you just hop around the stores and get the free 2 week trials? haha
Do you actually save that much buying contacts online?
