Default Beluga Whale saves Freediver

Ran across this story on a Dive forum, thought it was cool enough to post here:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/news...ves-diver.html

Quote:
Yang Yun thought she was going to die when her legs were paralysed by arctic temperatures during a free diving contest without any breathing equipment.

Competitors had to sink to the bottom of an aquarium's 20ft arctic pool and stay there for as long as possible amid the beluga whales at Polar Land in Harbin, north east China.

But when Yun, 26, tried to head to the surface she found her legs were crippled by cramps.

"I began to choke and sank even lower and I thought that was it for me – I was dead. Until I felt this incredible force under me driving me to the surface," she explained.

Mila, the Beluga whale, had spotted her difficulties and using her sensitive dolphin-like nose guided Yun safely to the surface.

"Mila noticed the problem before we did," explained an organiser.

"We suddenly saw the girl being pushed to the top of the pool with her leg in Mila's mouth. She's a sensitive animal who works closely with humans and I think this girl owes her life."

Intelligent Belugas were among the first whales to interact with man and have facial muscles that allow them to smile.
I haven't been in the water with Belugas, but swimming with dolphins has given me an appreciation for how smart some of these mammals are.

No, both beluga whales and dolphins are mammals.

...Unless I am missing some inside joke

What the story didn't explain was that to celebrate the divers survival, they killed Mila the whale, mixed her with mayo, and spread her over crackers.

I hate green text but if you're going to execute sarcasm that poorly, then it may be necessary...

Was it sarcasm or was it an inside joke or obscure reference to something? There's a big difference. I mean, just disagreeing with a truth isn't really sarcasm is it?

In any case, nice story and thanks for posting it.

I thought it was a Simpsons quote; Homer talking to Lisa.

Free Diver=> Freeman...I thought this post was going to involve whales fighting against the law society.

There was a Simpson's episode similar to that when Homer and Bart join the Big Brother (or similar take off) program. Though the quote wasn't anywhere near it so that could be where the confusion is. I thought it was a sarcastic remark, but it may have been a mistake. Definitely heard dumber things here.

As for the story, great find. Very interesting. I know some whales are still hunted, not sure about belugas. I personally think hunting any type of whale should be illegal.
