I guess it would depend on the price jump and how bad you wanted the item. But I am inclined to say a deal is a deal. And if he doesn't drop his price, walk away.

You are correct. Offer/acceptance/subject = contract.

Send him Notice of Understanding and commercial tender. You consented to contract and are bound by it just as he is under Common Law. There is no authority to deny contract and damage property strawberry jam. Free slurpees loud noises.

At best of times in my mind anything off of kijiji is buy at your own risk. I would be inclined to walk away because what will he come up with next?
If it is something that you really want and you are willing to get screwed then go for it.
If you decide to walk away play the game back with him. Say yes, to the higher price and see what he then says. Maybe he will continue to add more conditions. If he doesn't add more conditions then delay things. Then when he gets pushy tell him you wish to pay the lower price now. LOL

In theory yeah a deal is a deal.
In practice it's not what's right, it's what can be enforced. Unless you are saving thousands and thousands going to small claims court to compel the person to sell it to you at that price isn't worth the hassle.

Why does the receipt influence the price?

Offer and acceptance. It depends how badly you want to pursue this.

A fair price for an item usually depends on what it was worth originally.. so if the guy had a completely wrong idea of what he paid for something then finding the receipt may make him reconsider what a fair price for it would be.
I usually don't care what the original price was and just check what current market value is instead...
But if I was selling something for $100 thinking I'd paid $200 for it and then found out I'd paid $1000 I'd probably reconsider my asking price. Not after I'd already sold it though.

Did you tell him you were going to pay cash and therefore the lesser price was warranted?

That likely only factors in if an offer was made by the buyer in the first place. If the seller asked for a certain price, the buyer then started negotiating the price, they're in offer and acceptance, and the seller is an idiot.
He cannot revise the price once you have mutual agreement, so depending on the value of the item.. it's up to you how you want to deal with it.

So basically the seller is an idiot?
I don't even check what I have ever paid for something I sold. I check to see what others are selling it for and depending on how desperate I am I put my price around that.
How much was the price difference?

I would agree to the higher price and then just pay him with traffic tickets, since I believe it was conclusively proven that they are in fact legal tender...

I'm not a racist, but did he have an ethnic accent on the phone or a funny looking name?
Tell him that you are part of the military and that the cash is currently in Europe but you will have it flown back to Canada on a Hercules Cargo Transport at your expense once he sends you a retainer via ebay for the safety of all parties.

In all seriousness, a deal should be a deal. Tell him that or the deal is off, or continue to bargain.
It's definetely poor form to be demanding more cash after the deal was agreed to, if you don't want/need the item that badly, let it go and tell him you are not accepting it on principle because of douchbaggery.
If you really want it though, try to leverage your position and get a little more out of it somehow. Make him feel guilty for upping the price and try to get something else on top of that.

Well, a couple of years ago I was able to sell my digital camera on Kijiji. About a week later I saw the newer model of the camera on sale at Best Buy for the same price I had sold mytwo year old, prev. Generation, lower MP camera compatible only with xD media for. I was kind of embarassed. If buddy had called me up I probably would have given him 50 bucks back.
