This may be overkill with all the like/dislike type threads going on, but I'm wondering what kind of demographic is on this board when it comes to CAlgary radio stations.
I really only listen to QR77, FAN960 & Q107. I like Peter Warren, Rob Breakenridge and don't mind Rutherford. Yeah I'm a rightie. Jim Rome is hilarious, Joe Sports has his issues, but I've bashed him enough lately, so I'll lay off him.
Q107 is the only bearable music station in this town.
I remember about 5 years ago, that rambling moron Gerry Forbes made some kind of child molestation joke on his morning show, and that was pretty much the last time I willingly listened to that station. If it's on in a pub, whatever, can't do much about it. The other reason CJAY sucks is because their format changed from classic rock with new rock, to teeny bopper Nickleback regurgitations over & over. I really don't like all these bands that sound exactly the same.
All I need is for Q107 to mix a little RHCP and some 90's grunge into their format & I'd be happy as a pig in (well, you know).
It was a sad day back in 2002 when I awoke to rap music on ROCK 97. I happen to like rap, but not when it's chopped up into a censored shell of it's former self.
Lite96 is great for my mom, but not me.
The EAGLE out of Okotoks isn't too bad, but there's a little too much 66CFR mixed into that one.
I've even caught myself listening to country 105 on occasion, but only when I'm 4x4ing late at night in McLean, because the reception is surprisingly good.
Like I said, the thread is probably overkill, but really it was a thinly veiled disguise for me to tell the world that Gerry Forbes is a buffoon who thinks that molesting kids is funny.

For some reason, I can never really listen to the Fan unless the Flames are playing, or QR77 unless there's a Stamps game not on TV/a Stamp type person is being interviewed on Sports Talk.
I'm your classic radio flipper. I'll flip from CJAY, to JACK, to Q, to the Eagle, to VIBE, to Country 105 until I find a song I like...or just keep flipping which I do a lot...and if that goes nowhere I put in a CD that I like and I'm happy. Q's probably the best, Jack has its moments, and I'm really getting sick of the crap CJAY plays (oh, how ######ed are those 'tough' contests?)

I agree on Forbes, well I didn't hear the child molestation thing, but it wouldn't suprise me. He has made more than a few comments on the air that have shocked me, even when I was in high school I was shocked to hear some of the crap he would spew onto the airwaves, and while at the time I thought it was funny, I quickly grew to dislike it more and more and by grade 11 I had had enough. Moved over the QR-77 in the mornings who at the time had Bruce Kenyon and really have never looked back, and in fact it was due to his move to Q-107 that I started to listen to their morning show. It is just right for me, where they play some solid music, have some great jokes at times which crack me up (usually just little witty one liners), report the news, and make the morning commute go by a bit faster. Then there is This Side Up which I absolutely love... being able to listen to a side of Abby Road, let it Bleed, amongst others (the Police, Pink Floyd, Frampton....).
The only thing I wish they would do would play a little bit of the Clash, but I don't know if there are crtc guidelines against which type of music they can play/

I like this idea for a thread!
I HATE CALGARY RADIO! For the most part, that is...
I will listen to theFan 960, because I love sports. Still though, way too many commercials.
CJSW 90.9 is okay sometimes, if you're in a bizarre mood.
CJAY92, I agree with you, it's gotten brutal. Now, that may just be because today's top40 rock music is brutal, but still. I just hear the same type of song over and over and over...
Lite96, yeah my mom likes it. I don't.
JACK is alright sometimes, but even they're getting a little shallow. Definitely NOT playing what they want.
Rap blows.
Country sucks, IMO, so I don't bother with 105.1
Q107 started off with some great promise but has tailed off and seems to have a 50 song playlist. Not going as deep into the music as they were at the beginning (remember when they were playing full albums at a time? MAN, that was awesome! I actually thought they would have kept that format.)
I don't know, maybe it's just today's music or whatever, but the radio in this city certainly is not that good.
Thanks 4X4.

I go in spurts listening to the radio.
My last job, it was on constantly...usually Q107, with CJAY if it got afternoon.
Last 5 months, no radio, at all. Not really missing the montony.
On the short drive to the train, its CJSW non lyrical jazz, or Fan 960...ride home, its Fan 960 as Kerr is on.
Other then that....
My overview: Vibe - Rarely...some ok music, more for a change then anything else.
Jack - Trying to be too cool, playing obscure songs just because they can that no-one ever liked, because they're horrible 80's songs in so many ways and try to package it as cool. Plus, Beasly and Eric Francis.
CJAY - Can't bother with Forbes...more so his cronies who lapp up his silliness. Jody Hughers has that nasally whiny voice that so many of our ex girlfriends that had.
Q107 - Decent, but they're playing the usual stuff, as oppsed to before where they had some deeper tracks
Lite 96 - Anyone calling themselves the Coach..and Joman. Enuff said.
CJSW - Really, only on weeday mornings early..plus the BBC World news is freshining.
CBC - The odd time I'll tune in to relax and try something new.
Can hardly wait ( I probably shouldn't wait, and just get a grey market system) for Satellite Radio to make its way up here...

Mainly listen to FAN 960 and sometimes QR 77 if there is a Hitman game on.
If I do listen to the music stations I prefer CJAY. Can't stand 107 at all. Their promos are horrible and the music isn't really all that great either.
For those in Lethbridge or who have been I would say that Rock 106 is easily better than station I remember in Calgary over the past 10 years.

Yeah.... I forgot about 90.9, not too bad if you find the right program (usually late at night).
Jack isn't too bad either, but for every head bobber (is that a term?), there are at least three wrist slicers (as long as I'm using strange terms...).
I guess Jack is what the rap station turned into.
There is still Vibe, which to my knowledge has recently become a pop station that plays a little rap. I guess the high-schoolers need a station too. I remember listening to AM106 wayyyy back in junior high.
My mom would be proud to know that I gave Shine 88.9 a little airtime on the way to gramma's house on Christmas. Actually, I was hoping I'd hear a Barry White version of white christmas.
And I agree that Q107 is not what they used to be. They are still the best option for music radio, and the comedy minutes are usually pretty good. Actually, because of the comedy minute, I discovered that Ellen Degeneres is pretty funny.

Listen primarily to QR77 and Fan960 - I'm normally listening to the radio in the car and enjoy talk radio more than music. If I'm listening to music its usually CDs though I don't mind Jack or the Eagle.
And for a little change you might want to try listening to CMRC Radio (Mt. Royal's radio station). Its now available online at www.cmrcradio.ca.
Check out "The Wayback Playback" Thursdays @ 10 - an 80s retro show. I personally like it but I'm a little biased. B-)

One of only a few things Edmonton is better then Calgary is radio. Edmonton has ALOT of really good radio stations; my favourite is the Bear up here.
In Calgary, there is 1 ok one (CJAY) and the other ones suck IMO.

That would be nice...especially since they are willing to play Canadian stuff like Headstones and Big Sugar to avoid having to play Doug & The Slugs songs.

CJay's degraded since the 90's, but I still listen to them.
I litsten to Fan 960 for games, and that's it.
CJSW is too weird and quite possibly has the worst taste in music on a 24/7 basis IMO. I sure hope my tuition isn't going to funding these clowns.
IMO, Q107 sucks too. Not intersted in old music that isn't really that captivating to begin with.
Jack can suck my ass. The play whatever they want, and that's the problem. There's no consistency. And some of that stuff that THEY want to play, I can't believe they would WANT to play that.
The best is my car stereo, best investment I ever made.
Oh yeah, and sometimes I listen to 106.4. The static provides for some good manual morse code debate.

I used to go from one station to the next, but no more.
For me, it's 105.1, but like browna, I go in spurts with the radio. A couple months later and they're probably playing a lot of the same songs. Classical is always an option, too.

I think by reading this thread I can tell that you the posters are just...well...um...maturing. Your tastes have changed, modified, expanded from the early days when there was only AM Radio or just one or two FM stations.
The reason there is 100 stations now is because of this demographic...tastes all over the radar.
Luckily for me in Ontario I can flip all over the place and find stations from as far as Detroit or NY State or Toronto and my area Kitchener/Waterloo and find pretty much anything I want. Stations that are 100% Blues, Jazz, Lite, Rock and Roll, Hard Rock, Pop...you name it.
Mostly I listen to the Fan590 and pop a CD in when bored with the drivel.

When there's hockey talk or hockey games, I'll listen to the Fan in the evening while working on models & stuff in the basement. Fan in the morning too and the drive home if they are talking about local / hockey content. I'll usually pop in a CD when ESPN etc. comes on, I hate hearing them go on about baseball and basketball. Same goes for the Jays -- no thanks.
Other than the Fan, it's usually Country 105 / CDs when driving the Expy, or JackFM / CDs when driving the sportscar in the summer. I've been known to put CBC 2 on sometimes too, for some soothing classical.

I primarily listen to Jack FM and Lite 96 on the FM side of things, and on the AM side of things I like Rutherford. He is really good.
The fan is good when there is hockey bc there is just so much discussion. I remember once having The Hockey Show on the radio and having Calgarypuck open on the computer at the same time.
Hey I have a question that I have been wanting to ask for a while. I was listening to Mark Stepehn's show once and there was someone from Calgarypuck on the show. I remember it was the beginning of the 2003-04 season and Mark just said here is __________________ from Calgarypuck.com. IIRC they were discussing if Conroy, Reinprecht, Yelle and Betts was good enough at center.
I was pretty shocked. I didnt think that CP was that big.
I think it was Bingo that was on the air, I am not sure though

The only problem with Rock 106 is repetitiveness. You get more variation of music from CJAY92 in one day than you do from Rock106 in one week. It is still the #1 radio station of all demographics for southern alberta (south of Calgary). Fraser of Fraser & Rosie's Big Breakfast show is getting to be an assclown too. There is only his opinion and it is clearly obvious that he isn't properly informed on what he talks about. He has become complacent probably because of Rock106's dominance of southern Alberta airwaves. I think it shows that he doesn't put as much effort into his job as he used to do.
So getting onto topic, I listen to CJAY92 over the internet during the day. Somedays their connection stinks so I have to listen to the Bear or club977.com.
