Thumbs up Google Maps Questions re. Calgary

I don't waste time often, but when I do, I prefer to waste it on Google Maps.

I've been looking at the Calgary map for awhile now, eagerly anticipating the day Streetview will arrive, and I noticed a few things that caught my attention.

First thing, if you go to the corner of Crowchild Trail and 33 Ave SW, then you zoom out to about the middle of the zoom slider bar, you'll notice what looks like a small lake used to be there.

The same thing happens on the corner of 37 St SW and Bow Trail.

Has there ever been a lake at any of those two spots that just disappeared overnight?

Second question...

If you find Sikome Lake, and you slide west on the 22X, beyond Shepard Road, you'll come across what looks like a bunch of ponds all clustered together. It looks like a bunch of holes.

What are these? Are they hot springs, inactive volcanoes, or something far more sinister?

And I also notice that some ponds/lakes are green and others are darker colored. I can believe that the green is due to algae or weird plants growing in the water, but if you zoom out from the area filled with holes, there is a pretty big lake north of there, where half the lake looks green.

Oh yeah,

I think it's clouds blocking the sun, causing shadows.

Funny but true story. A few months ago we bought a new iMac, and I installed Google Earth while our niece was visiting. (19, typical blonde that all the jokes make reference to)... She asks how they can get the images in such detail etc. After hearing that they are satellite images, she runs out to the lawn.. starts waving and yelling "zoom in, can you see me?"

"Yes, I can see that you're an idiot".

I actually saw the Google Maps vehicle again this morning, travelling Southbound on Sarcee just past 17th Avenue SW.

I saw it a few weeks ago parked downtown with a parking ticket.

I used to work at Shepard landfill. You're probably looking at our collection ponds. That's where everything from runoff to car wash water goes.
