Marchant will give us 2 years of an elite defensive forward at a fair price. Helm would give us 10 some years, but not this year and that is what we care about!

I think this is the type of deal GMs will say is fair for the direction of both teams. I needed some CPHL guys who can eat some minutes. Todd has a 79DF and 77FO so he is exactly the type of depth forward we needed.

Since we got half the cap back he really only cost about 1 mill. I know I could have waited until UFA but I don't want to rely on that to fill a few holes on this team.

Thanks for the quick drunk deal Steve!

Are you talking about the same Darren Helm that had 4G, 1A and was +1 in the playoff of his life for Detroit?

The guy is going to be a premier third liner. I get a full season of Marchant and his top notch DF and good contract as well as potentially another season where he is likely at least equivalent to Helm. I don't see myself losing out on ratings in this deal for 2 years and even then when i eventually do lose out I don't see Helm as a top 6 player.

Helm is a good return for Marchant, especially compared to what I've heard offered for other veteran players in deals, but right now thats a pretty good increase for the Ducks. Marchant has good DF and FO ratings and should be a top penalty kill guy and be able to anchor a third line. If you wanna win you have to get over youth and trade for guys that will help you now. Marchant does that for the Ducks, so I think both teams are happy. I know I could use a guy like Marchant.

And that's why it's a damn good return.

I'm not saying that you overpaid or didn't get a good player. Just that long term, he got a really good player.

Long term the Devils win for sure. And in hindsight maybe I should have asked for a 2nd or 3rd rounder, but that is what happens when you drunk trade!

Pretty even deal IMO; you can't always rebuild and the Ducks have the depth to do a trade like this. Good return for Steve, yes but for$1mm this year, the Ducks have a great 3rd line center.

youth is sometimes over-rated, and doesn't win hockey games...

depending on where your team is at.... youth can be great or winning games is more important. I see this as a smart hockey deal for the ducks, win for both teams
