F-ing Drunk Drivers! They need to be charged with murder.
My friend's cousin was killed last nite after some f-ing drunk driver ran a red light and smashed into him on sarcee and Richmond Road. He leaves behind his wife and 3 little kids.
Punishment for drinking and driving is such a joke right now. We should have zero tolerance for DUI's. You drink and drive. You lose your license forever.

Are they not charged for murder if they kill someone? They are charged for manslaughter in the states.

Interestingly, on the way home from baseball last night I went through a checkstop on 6th Ave just on the way out of downtown. I have never come across one mid-week like that. Just in the wrong place, I guess.

The dumbest kind of hit and run- he left his vehicle there and fled on foot. Like they weren't going to be able to track him down.
Maybe he was thinking of trying to beat the impaired charge, but once you see somebody bleeding I would hope that the person would try to help instead of self-preservation.

Sorry to hear about your friend's cousin.
I'm not usually one to advocate for a conservative "Let's get tough on crime" approach to justice but I have a hard time arguing against this. I suspect impaired driving trials would increase in number dramatically and a lot of charter challenges would ensue.
Perhaps on your first conviction, provided its a simple impaired conviction with no injuries and no accident you get a long suspension. Any subsequent convictions or any injuries/accident/death related to your first conviction and it's bye bye driving privileges.

Sometimes I wish there was zero tolerance for alcohol and driving, then i'd have an excuse not to drink while driving. If I drink a club soda while at a bar, people look at me funny and ask why i'm not having a beer. Then it goes into the discussion of how I know multiple people who have had DUI's and have seen first hand how it affects their lives, and it actually affected my life as well since I was driving them around a lot. And I don't want to end up like that, yadda yadda.

In this day and age, drinking and driving should carry a "one and done" consequence.
You get caught doing it once, and you're on foot for the rest of your life. There is no excuse for anyone to ever think it's ok.

Yup. It's not the 1950's anymore. Anyone with half a brain should know not to drink and drive, and if you don't then you shouldn't be driving anyways.

"Impaired driving causing death" Basically, a couple months in jail and a stern lecture.
You have to be a cement truck driver and kill an entire family of five before Canadian "justice" will contemplate manslaughter.

Fixed. If you drive drunk and actually kill someone, that is murder (or at least manslaughter) IMO.
While I understand that going to jail and/or losing the right to drive because you made a stupid decision when you were 18 seems a little harsh, but try explaining that to a little kid who just lost his daddy.
My condolences to the OP and the families involved.

While I agree, I'm not sure it would do much. People who care so little for the law and the safety of others that they'd continue to drink and drive after being caught previously would likely drive without a license. It's very difficult to prevent actions by people who apparently don't care about any consequences.

It's time for zero tolerance. Past time in fact. There is not tenable reason to allow any kind of drinking and driving.

I agree the penalties are not strict enough, but I would like to see what the average punishment for this is in Canada. I suspect it is more than a couple of months in jail.
In Europe the penalties are harsh, and very few people drink and drive. They also have much better public transit.
