Default What do I do with Old Encyclopedias?

I have a set of Encyclopedia Britannica from 1989 that I want to get rid of. They're in pristine condition so I'd prefer not to throw them out, but will if I can't find any other options.

I tried checking the City of Calgary website to see if I could just blue bin them out, but they don't recycle any hard cover books.

I tried calling the local library, but they don't accept them either.

The library recommended I call the Calgary Correctional Centre, but they don't accept them either... (though they mentioned they do accept pocket books and "male oriented reading"...whatever that means )

I'll probably try craigslist and maybe something called freecycle.org, but I'm doubtful anyone would take these.

Anybody have any ideas what the hell I'm supposed to do with these things before I just chuck them?

Sure! Just fire me your address and I'll come by with them right away. You leave your set in the driveway, I'll come by with mine, and I'll drop off my set on your driveway, and we'll go from there.

The royal blue pleather covers and gold trim pages should burn quite nicely

I cant believe how cheap brand new encyclopedias are. You can get a brand new set for under $200. And fantastic quality as well. Its crazy.

If I lived in Calgary I might have taken them off your hands. I need a bunch of hard cover books to fill up my office library once it is done.

Did you call more than one library? I know the town I live in the library has a book sale every 3 months or so and sells books that people have dropped off. Often I find many encyclopedia sets there. Maybe a different library will take them.

What about churches? Or other non-profit groups that send supplies overseas?

Internet competition destroyed their oligopoly on information?

I suspect there are a lot of people out there who would gladly take these off your hands. Hell, I would for when I build a library down the road, but the lady probably won't let me keep them in the basement.

I have a set where Montreal is the largest city in Canada, WWI is called the great war, Africa is where 'Negros' come from and this is the modern airplane.

Needless to say, I didn't do very well in some school projects.

I say keep them if you have room. They will make an interesting point of reference for future generations of your family.

Does anyone have a recent set of Encyclopeidas? I mean sure I have a crap load of history texts books from my BA days. But hasn't the internet killed the general idea of an encyclopedia?

Scan them. It would be useful if we could get the encyclopedia information online.

My parents gave me a "Canadian Encyclopedia" set for my 8th birthday. I remember being so friggin' pissed at them. Like what the hell, what kind of present is that??

Imagine that. Got a PM from someone who will take them off my hands. She's gonna make her son read them I think the "Science and the Future" supplement, looking into the future world of 1990, should be an especially good read lol.

And no I didn't check other branches, but I asked the lady at the library who would take them. It sounded like she ran off to get a list, rustled through it, only to find one place on her list: the correctional centre :\
