So I have become a Michael Crichton fan over the last few years and just finished Congo and really enjoyed it. Im wondering if watching the movie will ruin it for me or if it is a good representation of the source material.

Do not watch the movie! It is absolutely atrocious.
Think about this, I watched it when I was like 13, when movies "like that" are cool because of action/violence, and I thought it was horrible then. I saw the last half a couple years ago and it was of course worse.
If you enjoyed the book (I have never read it), you should stay far away from the movie.

Do not watch the movie. I was going to come in here and post a funny "Don't watch it, it's crap" thinking someone was actually going to the congo. No, avoid it at all costs. Book good, Movie bad.

The movie is good for a few laughs. The gorillas are just ridiculous. If you think you might be entertained by 2 hours of this kind of schlock
VIDEO
then the movie might be for you.

Don't bother with the movie. Same goes for Sphere.

It was one of the worst book-to-movie translations I've ever seen.
It was ALMOST bad enough that it ends up becoming good based on the comedic value, but it even fails to do that.
BTW, who here has actually been to the Congo?

The dreaded "quote yourself" here, but can you folks actually see the video I embedded? I just see a white square.

Can't see a video either.
And here I thought this thread would be about laying pipe in the Congo.

Is the Congo a good place to do business, if you are in the mining business?

Depends which Congo you're thinking about.

You should watch the movie just for the boobs alone. Be patient, it's near the end. Just wait for it.

Timeline as well. Mediocre novel but one of the worst movies ever made imo.

I had to do a report on the book Congo for school - of course, as usual I hadn't read the book yet.
So I rented the movie instead and that sort of desperate gamble gave it a place in my heart and I have always liked that movie.

Don't bother, bad movie.
On a related note, does anyone else HATE the endings Chrichton came up with for his books? He'd write a great book, and it always seemed like he'd hit a point where he goes "OK, how can I end this quickly?"
Lysene dependencies, helicopter attacks, volcanoes, "wishing" it away... seriously???
I think I hated pretty much every single one of his endings.

In the Sin Bin
I think Congo might be the worst Crichton movie. EDIT: Timeline is worse.
The Gorillas are not convincing at all which is surprising considering CGI technology in the past couple decades and Jurassic park itself.
I preferred Sphere and the Jurassic park ones, although in every case the book is better.

Timeline is the only Chrichton book i have never finished. I tried to start and read it 5 or 6 times and i don't think i ever got past page 50.
Jurassic park was awesome though.
