Default Authorities prevent Las Vegas style mass shooting at MLB All Star game

https://www.thedenverchannel.com/new...-all-star-game

Quote:
Police feared a “Las Vegas style shooting” during the All-Star Game in Denver after arresting four people Friday night at the Maven Hotel, based on the number of weapons and ammunition investigators found at the scene.

Multiple informed law enforcement sources connected with the investigation told Denver7’s Liz Gelardi and Denver7 chief investigative reporter Tony Kovaleski that they intercepted the weapons in a hotel room near Coors Field ahead of the All-Star Game Friday.

Sources said police removed 16 long guns, body armor and more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition from a room on the eighth floor of the Maven Hotel that had a balcony. The sources said they feared the number of weapons, ammo, vantage point and large crowds could have resulted in a Las Vegas style shooting.

The sources said the weapons were discovered by a maid who alerted authorities. Based on the information provided by the employee, police executed a search warrant and found the guns, ammo, body armor and a man inside the room on the eighth floor.

One of the suspects arrested Friday night had posted a message on Facebook referencing a recent divorce and saying he was going to “go out in a big way,” according to the multiple law enforcement sources.

jesus its weird how we read titles. When I read the start mass shooting at MLB All star game for some reason my mind blanked on prevented. My heart sank and I almost didn't want to read the thread.

Glad it was prevented, Vegas is still pretty fresh.

Yeah it does, I wasn't criticizing you or trying to be picky. Yeah sometimes miracles come from the strangest places.

Its just insane to me that someone that's getting divorced makes the leap to mass murder or attempted mass murder.

Or someone failing schools or losing their jobs.

For some reason it just feels like society or humanity is just becoming angrier and angrier.

It's great to hear a story of prevention rather than the after effect tragedy like what happened in LV. I guess the question now is, now that we've now seen this thing twice, how does that change the open air stadiums and specifically the surrounding buildings overlooking these stadiums, in the future? Any sports league cannot afford to deal with if this thing were to happen again, so how do they ensure it doesn't. For MLB, one incident would be all it would take to hurt their gate revenue for years to come. This is such a huge story that will probably not get a headline.

Damn. That is scary.

I was hoping the article would have mentioned some sort of FBI intelligence or something caught these guys. Nope, it was a maid because some dope forgot to put on the “do not disturb” sign on the door. That doesn’t exactly fill me with a lot of confidence that something like this won’t happen again...

I couldn’t help but think the maid story was made up to get a search warrant, and they actually had surveillance or intelligence that they acted on. Something about the way the laws in the US are, they can’t just surveil anyone for no reason; but they probably are.

America is in good shape when shootings have style variants like they're preparing pizza. New York style, Chicago style, Las Vegas style...

It got me thinking about what rights a hotel guest has (legally and otherwise); based on this it sounds like hotel chains are making it more clear that they have the right to enter your room regardless of whether you have a "do not disturb" sign:

Quote:
You might think that a "Do Not Disturb" sign on your hotel or motel room doorknob guarantees that you'll be left alone. But since a gunman on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas reportedly hung such a sign on his door for three days in October 2017 before opening fire on a music festival and killing 58 people, some hospitality chains are altering their practices.

At hotels in the Hilton chain, for example, if a "Do Not Disturb" sign is on a door for 24 hours, the hotel's security or duty manager is notified, in order to check on the guest.

"Guest privacy and welfare are a top priority at Hilton," a company spokesperson explains in an email. "We regularly review and update our policies and procedures to align with the latest industry standards. We have long had Do Not Disturb procedures in place, and at the end of [2017] updated our policy to provide Team Members with additional guidance on how best to address the welfare of our guests and status of our rooms. This guidance was provided to help properties protect guest privacy, but also manage suspicious activity and any concerns about a guest's welfare."

Several hotels at Walt Disney World in Florida reportedly got rid of "Do Not Disturb" signs altogether, replacing them with "Room Occupied" signs, and informed guests that the hotel and its staff had the right to enter rooms, the Orlando Sentinel and other news outlets reported.

Make Yourself At Home?

Those sorts of changes are reminders that when you stay in a hotel or motel, you shouldn't necessarily expect to have the same degree of privacy that you enjoy in your own home. Hospitality law experts explain that while hotels and motels want guests to feel comfortable, they still own the property, and also have an interest in protecting their employees and other guests. In some instances, property owners also might cooperate with police and other law enforcement agencies by turning over information about who's staying with them.

"You have to keep in mind, in the hotel guest relationship, the guests do not own the hotel room as they do their homes or cars," Stephen Barth, an attorney and professor of hospitality law at the University of Houston, explains. "They have been licensed by the hotel to use this space."

According to Barth, hotels and motels have good reason to be wary about what guests might do on their premises. "This conversation didn't just come up because of Las Vegas," he says. "This has been brewing for many years because of meth labs, prostitution and other illegal activity going on in hotel rooms. Human trafficking is on the radar as well. Hotels have been diligently trying to address those issues."

Question is whether this makes it harder to get charges to stick, though. Which of course is still better than letting a shooting happen.

This is chilling - the maid may have saved 10-100 lives, or more.

Why would anyone do an illegal sale of guns right there, especially on that weekend? I understand criminals are not always the smartest bunch, but between the buyers and sellers there must have been one guy that said, "how about the motel6, next Thursday, instead?".

Reasonable to think the worst here. Let conspiracy theories fly, because trust is at an alltime low.
