Default [DIY] Do you know where I can get metal sidewalk grates?

I've got a concrete gutter in my back yard and I would like to cover it with metal grates. Does anyone know where I could buy these, and about how much they would be?

Why couldn't the city put that thing outside the property line?

Have you called anybody in the Yellow pages? I went to canada411.com and one metal place says "If you need something.... ask us."

All I entered was metal under the category and then Calgary.

You're actually not allowed to cover them.

There's a shop in Inglewood that makes iron bars for windows.. maybe they could do something for you? I can't recall what it's called right now though.. Iron Works maybe?

Are you talking about the gutter that runs down the back of your yard by the fence? Don't a lot of newer homes have these? My parents house is 25 and they have this.

It's referred to as a "Swale"

According to the City, you can't cover it. I'd try to contact a local fabricator and do it anyway. just feign ignorance if you get busted.

Surface Drainage Facilities

Surface Drainage Facilities include concrete swales (channels or gutters), grassed swales and walkways. The Bylaw requires Surface Drainage Facilities to be kept clear of debris and obstructions at all times. Retaining walls, terraces, gardens, play areas or sheds cannot be constructed or placed in this area. In a heavy rainstorm it is possible for these systems to flow full of rainwater, and any obstructions in the flow could cause flooding. Concrete swales commonly run along the back or side of residential properties. If a fence must be built over a concrete swale, you must provide at least 0.15 metres (6 inches) of clearance between the bottom of the fence and the top of the swale.
