Default Calgary Indie Music Scene

I just heard a single from Reverie Sound Revue on cbc radio 3 and it took me back to my engineering undergrad days as I was going to school with one of the band members at the time. Glad to hear that they're "making it" now.

Canadian indie music is certainly getting stronger these days and Calgary seems to be both benefitting and contributing. Folk fest, Sled Island, Broken City/Zak Pashak, and a host of other individuals and efforts appear to be the driving force behind this evolution... are we finally getting a "culture"?

Where else do you people like to go for live indie music? Who's big on the indie scene right now in Alberta?

I heard a pretty cool song on Radio3 last week by a band called "The Rural Alberta Advantage".

They have a few sample mp3s on their website: http://www.theraa.com/audio.html

The Rural Alberta Advantage is a fantastic band, definitely check them out.

I know some people from Hot Little Rocket, as well as Jane Vane and the Dark Matter. Hot Little Rocket has been around for about 10 years, although I think they're breaking up to do their own side projects... pretty good band though.

Now this is my kind of thread!

Two Hours Traffic, Sunday Buckets, Plants and Animals, Luke Doucet, Holy ######, Hey Rosetta!, Destroyer, the Constantines, The Arkells, and The Wheat Pool are all most definitely worth your time.

An extra shout-out goes to Frankie McQueen from Calgary. Great old school rock and roll and I know some of the guys in the band too! They just won 20 grand or something like that in a battle of the bands thing I think. So go and check them out fo-shizzle!

Chad van Gaalen is from Calgary, and is quietly taking off on the Canadian music scene.

Don't forget too that Tegan and Sara are from Calgary; one of our most successful acts, and two girls who grew up at Cresent Heights High School.

As for today's local indie picks, Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir and The Villians are my personal favorites.

CJSW and CBC3 do a great job.

CJSW charts (** denotes local artist):

http://www.cjsw.com/music/charts.html

On CBC3, go to New Music Canada tab, click Artists, and you can scroll through to find Calgary bands.

I was going to ask this the other day... What are some good pubs/bars to go to to see live bands? I know the distillery, but it seems a little trashy for me, wondering if anyone knows if there are any nice bars that have a band on every tuesday or something?

Dickens Pub used to be nice, then Monotonix came in a couple of weeks ago and trashed the hell out of it. Now it's no better than a smoldering hole in the ground.

Women are a Calgary band making huge waves.

Anyone heard them?

they've been lumped in with Deerhunter/No Age et al. as the new sound of guitar-driven indie noise rock.

Women is from Calgary? I had no idea... people keep recommending them to me because I like Deerhunter, but I haven't checked them out yet. I definitely will now.

Hot Little Rocket rule... and I think one of its members is a poster here.
