Default The "Good Guy" Deal

Has anyone ever had this actually work out so it's been a notably good deal?

Examples: My fiance's dad has a friend who can paint exteriors. He asked him to do just the high stuff on his house, and he would pay him. He comes, sands, primers a bit, and then effs off because of his "back". Rip off.

I usually get called to my brother's, or fiance's parents, or whoever's to fix computer viruses etc. There's always a case of beer in it for me... but then the work takes like 4 hours. Rip off.

I am now in negotiations with my roommate/buddy's friend who has a bigger place for my fiance and I to move in to. They say it's a good deal however, now I find that they basically just want market value for it, and they are calling it furnished because they don't want to move their stuff.

Good Guy deals suck imo. I've had a very small few actually work out to be win-win situations.

Ya more often than not you get what you pay for. A ton of the work on my house I had done by a friend of the family that needed the work and gave me a good deal had to be ripped out by the profesionals that came to finish it when he stopped showing up.

I have to agree with Jason- most of my deals made with friends work out.

Then again, I perhaps don't complain as much when I'm doing PC support for them. Maybe that's why when they come over to do plumbing or whatever they do a good job for me.

For really important, actually costly work, professionals are better than friends unless your friends are professionals. Both sides have to agree on compensation because I scratch your back, you scratch mine or favors often turn bitter/sour due to how unbalanced they can be.

Maybe it's because my family in particular are useless.

What are salespeople, teachers, accountants etc going to do for me?

Everyone in IT (or who is young enough to look like he knows about computers) knows about the "computer help" ones. Eventually you will realize to just say no and tell them to take it to FS or MemX.

Wait a sec....

Are these the same "friends" that wanted to throw you (*cough*themselves*cough*) a bachelor party?

Time to examine your relationship with them.

I get it for both computer help and photography now that I have a "nice" camera.

I've had this actual conversation with someone (not a friend just someone who knows me). Hey I'm getting married and was looking around and wedding photographers are like $3000. You have a nice camera that takes good pictures, want to take my wedding photos for us. I'll pay you $150 and you give me all the photos on a cd.
