Clapping in Movie Theatres
So I just saw a sneak peek of Bruno(pretty ridiculous, had its moments, but nothing great.....6/10) and at the end of the movie, the theatre erupts in applause. This is the 5th consecutive movie that I have been to where people are clapping at the end. Not just premieres, regular showings as well. I saw the Hangover like a month after it came out and there was clapping.
Why do people do this?? If the creator was in the audience, I would understand, or hell, even if the caterer was in the audience, I would kind of understand. But come on, what's the point?? It makes zero sense. It makes as much sense as starting a thread about clapping in movie theatres, but I had to vent because it just drives me nuts.
Am I alone??

Hearing clapping in a movie theatre was one of the most awkward moments of my life... although all of the one's I was present for were premiere's... Star Wars comes to mind... it's really really gay though, I don't understand it at all

you are not alone, I dont see the point and it drives me crazy too. Then again there is no point in yelling at your tv when your team is sucking but that doesnt stop me.

yeah, but that's getting caught in the moment. When people clap at a great one liner or sight gag in a movie, that doesn't bother me, it's the clapping at the end that puts me over the edge.

I don't get that either... I also don't get clapping when a regularly scheduled flight lands when nothing really happened to/on it.

Because it's not that easy to fly an airplane, and if NOTHING happened, then the pilot deserves the applause so people can show that they appreciate the good job.

Isn't that just to thank the pilot for not killing you on the landing. Or telling him/her they did a good job?

I would think that that would be as good a reason as any for a round of applause!
A LOT of people are really afraid of flying so upon landing applause is probably a huge release of relief. Put it this way I can completely understand this compared to clapping in the flippin movie theater.

See... I normally fly WestJet, so I can actually say Thanks to the pilot as I walk by to get off the plane. I don't know if the captain and first officer can hear clapping with the cockpit door closed.

On planes, I get it, have no problem, and clap myself. Consider how badly the average person drives. Flying is harder, and they're all good at it.
As far as movies....I only ever clapped when Samuel L Jackson said "I'm sick and tired of these mother bleeping snakes...etc."

Not sure which is worse, clapping in a theatre or cell phones going off. Then there's the constant pop up lights as people open thier cell phones to text or answer calls.

I went to see 2001: A Space Odyssey at the CIFF a few years back and some intellectual who'd written a book about it was in attendance; he gave a little speech before the film and then everyone applauded after the film - I wondered if it was for that guy or more for the movie...
...and back in the 90s, when A League Of Their Own was playing in theatres and they still had those 'cheap Tuesday' deals - saw the movie on a Tuesday night in a packed auditorium at the Westbrook mall theatre (which is now Jubilations/Aussie Rules). There is a scene where Tom Hanks throws a baseball glove at the head of an obnoxious kid character that nearly drew a standing ovation from the crowd. It absolutely killed.
When I saw Star Wars Episode I in its theatrical run there was applause for the introduction of virtually character from the original trilogy... Obi Wan Kenobi, C3PO, even R2D2... that I thought was lame. Yay... R2-fataing-D2.

Clapping in movie theatres is about as cool as adults flying kites.

The only people that clap when airplanes land are the old timers (and thier now grown up children who got petrified when they were young with the old stories from their parents) who used to fly back in the black and white era with propeller planes, when the chances of there being a serious issue at takeoff, during the flight, or landing, was 10-20%.

I only think I've ever clapped for a movie twice... both times for The Dark Knight, at the midnight premier, and then the next time when I saw it in IMAX... both times were also when they gave the 'Dedicated to Heath Ledger' part, or whatever at the end.
Most of the time, I agree, it's pretty dumb, but that was a fantastic movie, and a fantastic performance by Ledger.

I'm not sure where it started from but my first experiences with it here in Calgary were always during Film Festival screenings, when usually one or more of the creators were present for certain flicks. I honestly don't mind it though, so what if no one who created the flick is there? At least people are showing their appreciation or that they're simply happy with what they just saw.
