Default Winters in Winnipeg

Do you want to see how bad the winters are in Winnipeg if you haven't experienced it already...my sister and her friends rented some movie called "New in Town" with Harry Connick Jr. and Renee Zellwegger (sp?) and anyways they showed me after they watched the movie that in the special features section they have a section which talks about where the movie was shot (Winnipeg) and how cold it was. It is amazing, camera lenses froze up and cracked, they wore 4 layers of clothing, has icicles hanging from their beards etc. I was blown away as I have never been to Winnipeg in the winter before.

Zellwegger and Harry Connick Jr. talk about their time in Winnipeg at this link:

Zellwegger:

"There were so many things about that place that were so charming. I loved the ice sculptures downtown . . . The tenacity of the people was just so impressive.

"But I would look outside and think -- 'where's the road?' because you can't see the road. 'I guess there's no driving today.' But that's not the case. Everybody just gets up and gets on with it like it's normal. It's just commonplace that your face freezes within two seconds of stepping outside the door."

As much as one of the reasons I moved to Calgary from Winnipeg was the winters; some of this is a little overblown.

The cold snaps we get here are a lot like those in a normal Winnipeg winter; it's just that there is no Chinook in the 7 day forcast. I would say any Calgarian made to spend a winter in Winnipeg would just comment that they miss the Chinooks, and that's about it.

It's very overblown. The 10 months I lived in Winnipeg going to college I found it hilarious how much people would complain about how cold it was when really it wasnt that bad. I would think to myself if they lived up here they would die.

Ive lived in both Thompson and Winnipeg. As for Thompson, there is a reason the Ford cold weather testing facility is there. Things like ice fog where the air is so cold you can see it.....I think the coldest I experienced there was -45....-58 with the wind chill.

Winnipeg, most of the winter its anywhere from -15 to -25.....its the 1 to two week cold snaps where it hit -30 and below.....that sucks. But the thing is its only a dry cold. If it hits -20 to -30 out east with the humidity.....now that is freakin cold.......

if you wanna talk about summer don't get me started on mosquitoes

I've driven through Winnipeg, but was only there long enough to get two speeding tickets. Someone needs to come in to this thread and explain to me why anyone would want to live there. Someone needs to tell me why my ex moved there and took my dog. Sounds like a place of torture.

It is a place of torture, I thought I established this already.

Maybe after living with you she decided Winnipeg wasn't so bad after all?

Seriously, there are a number of good things about Winnipeg and Manitoba. You are less than an hour from a nice cottage area. There is a lot of diverse ethnicities there and I think Winnipeg still has the "most restaurants per capita" record.

The thing with Winnipeg is you have to live there to know where a lot of the good stuff is. When I went back for school I would have friends come visit me from Calgary, and wonder where the heck I was taking them. Since moving back some have tried to time their family vacations for when I would be there to show them the cool spots that their 80 year old grandparents wouldn't know about.

But a lot of Winnipeg's negatives are quite a bit more obvious. The extreme weather, the seediness which makes it look like it would have a higher crime rate than Calgary, the roads that are in such poor condition due to previously mentioned extreme weather.

All that being said, I'll take Calgary over Winnipeg. But I may still build on my cottage lot I own there too; and just go during the summers.

Overblown? Maybe. But I spent the first 18 years of my life there and winters there are brutal compared to Calgary IMO. I know my cousin had a t-shirt with some stats on it about one of the coldest winters (mid 90's) and we went a stretch of over 100 days of not getting above zero.

I spent a couple months there one day playing hockey.

Flags on the hydrants. Like those on little kids bikes, so they could find them.

A dog ran across a backyard fence to the next yard. Without jumping.

It was the volume of snow that shocked me less than the cold. Although, the girls did not seem to mind a little cuddling. IYKWIM. wink, wink.
