You need quite a bit of schooling, most people do a bachelors degree in sciences, write their PCAT (and try MCAT as well) and try to get admission to graduate school for a Pharmacy degree and it's very competitive in Canada. I know many friends who couldn't quite make med school switch to pharmacy and even more who couldn't even get into pharmacy.

Garbage collectors in Toronto do as well, apparently

There's a huge shortage of pharmacists in Alberta. $44.00/hour is unheard of here. They can command upwards of $70.00/hour. They can ask for the moon, and usually get it. Drugstore chains are now recruiting people who are just entering school - even schools from other provinces. They'll pay for the education required in return for a couple of years of service when done.

My brother just finished his Pharmacy degree at the U of T. When he got admitted to the U of T, he was one of three non-Ontario residents that got accepted. The entry requirements are super tough
He is making $46/hour now for his 3 month probation. Once that is over he will make $60 an hour. Tons of opportunities for OT as well ($69/hour during probation and $90/hour afterwards). Oh, and when he signed on with Wal-Mart, they gave him a $52,000 signing bonus.
My son will be getting spoiled by this rich uncle!

The only requirement for pharmacy is good grades. You need roughly a 3.5 and that's all. Extracurricular and other tests isn't really required unlike Med/Dent.
The PCAT is only required if you plan to do school in the states.

Yeah, in the Okanagan they are in huge demand too. The hospital in Penticton can't get any because they can all get retail jobs that pay better. There isn't a lot of jobs in the BC Okanagan that pay $48 an hour (at least not legal ones). It's competitive but the employment outlook in that field looks pretty solid.

I don't think that is exhorbitant whatsoever. The field is hugely competitive, it is not an easy field to be in, and I don't think that is a huge salary when you think of what they are dispensing. Sick people put a lot of faith in pharmacists doing their job correctly.

Well pharmacy right now IMO isn't looked at as a 'lucrative' field yet. But give it a couple years and it will. Last I heard, they were trying to give pharmacists the power to prescribe meds as well. It's a good field to be in - however your potential ceiling is low. What you make in 10 years will likely be what you make in the next 10.

I don't know about that. I always thought all they do is hand you over the counter whatever your doctor prescribed. No?

Well if they give you the wrong meds...
Also, they also tell you how to take the meds. With water, on a full stomach, once a day... etc. These are pretty important

All they need to do is learn to read hieroglyphs on the prescription.

The doc tells you that and there's this little piece of paper inside of every package with instructions, right?

Added a poll for wages, made it multiple choice so people could vote for 2 income homes or two different jobs or whatever.
Not a public poll

Haha quite true, but they also need the knowledge. There's more than just your superstore pharmacist. A lot work in hospitals and rural areas where they do more than just count pills. It's a good stable career to have, but it's boring as hell.
