Stop using it. In emails, phone calls, texts, and in real life. Especially in real life. You don't sound hip, you sound like you're trying too hard.

By using "Cheers" in place of "Thanks" I still got the thanks message across, and the person receiving it knows that I was making a positive comment.
Another example; as an IT Support person:
"I have restored all of the folders that you deleted.
Cheers
Ken"
In that case, they are not getting a "thanks" from me- they caused me some extra work. But I'm not upset. So "Cheers" is also an appropriate salutation.

Outside North America, "cheers" is used widely.
I don't see anything wrong with it. As Ken pointed out, it's usually more appropriate than "thanks".

It drives me nuts because it is used outside of North America extensively, but not here. If an Aussie cheers's me, I'm cool with it. When people do it here, I think "try hard". But now I've gotten over it and just accept it.

I sign most casual work emails with "Cheers,". The more formal ones get a "Regards,".
There is nothing worse than an email signed "Thanks,". It comes across really insincere and implies that whatever was stated in the email must be done/accepted/etc.
Even worse is people who sign work emails with "Thanks!".

I never used to say cheers, until I spent a year living in England where everyone used it and I picked it up...now I'm back in Calgary and still say it. I noticed a lot of people here say it, and it doesn't bug me at all.

I use "Cheers", "Thanks", "Regards", or "Sincerely" in work e-mails, depending on who I'm writing to and the situation.
Unrelated question - how do you create the "does not equal" sign in the thread title?

I sign all my work emails with regards, I didn't think there was anything wrong with that. If I have to thank someone, I thank them in the body of the email.

I don't mind it at all.
I think you've got to be careful with it, though. Sometimes (IMO) it comes across as forced; I'm going to sign my e-mail with a "Cheers" because I am an easygoing, likable person.
I see that "Cheers" sitting there at the bottom of an email and it sticks out like a sore thumb. Especially when friends/colleagues all of a sudden adopt it after years of not saying cheers.
That's just my experience with it.
