Default Riu Resorts

Anyone stay at one of these in Mexico? Our travel agency said they are pretty awesome and they have some killer all-inclusive prices.

I stayed at the Santa Fe in Cabos in Jan. I thought I would hate all inclusives but I would defiantly go back.

Cabos was great too. Lots to do and found it pretty safe.

Cool, that's good to hear. We are booking the Riu Emerald Bay in Mazatlan. The travel agent said one of the coolest things in the room is that they have a Booze dispenser that is refilled daily.

We got all-inclusive for dead cheap ($967 each) because the hotel is brand new and trying to build a reputation so they want lots of traffic. Sounds pretty sweet. Includes flights, booze, food, everything.

This is it here: http://www.riu.com/en-ca/Paises/mexi...-bay/index.jsp

The booze is usually refilled every two days but if you catch the guys in the hall, they will refill it every day. We drank the beer from our room and used the pop and water as currency for the beech vendors. The booze bottles all had their labels facing the wall so it was always an adventure as to what cocktail you were creating.

Stayed at the Riu Playacar. From what I remember, it was outstanding.

I've been to Mexico three times and the best stay I had was at the Riu Caribe in Cancun.

In Febuary we moved from the Riu Las Americas in Cancun to another resort after one day.

The Room was falling apart. No AC, the bed was dirty and the sliding Balcony door was broken. When we asked if we could change rooms, they basically told us to F-off.

The Food sucked too. Maybe it was just the time we were there.

I cannot speak for other Riu resorts though.

We moved to the Cancun Palace... it was 100 times better.

We ALWAYS do Riu's when we go away. We have done Riu Caribe in Cancun, and Riu Bambu in Punta Cana. Always a great place to stay, great food, and great service!

That's too bad... This hotel was completed in May 2009 (last month) so I have a hard time imagining this kind of problem.

From the reviews I've read, it sounds like everything is top-notch with the exception of the food being just "good." Personally, I think that's a forgone conclusion at all-inclusives.

Basically Trip Advisor is your friend.

When we booked the hotel it was like 90percent 4/5 or 5/5 but in the month and a half leading up to the trip it dropped to 50-50. Must have had new management or something.

The issue with new hotels is that all the services may not be available.. Go on trip advisor and read what people are saying.

Cool, Yeah I went on there. It looks like people are rating it Good and Average, but everyone is saying good value. Except some old people. It sounds like they had a pretty disruptive storm for the first week, and the place is so new it's tough to find reviews. I think as Sept approaches they will get their legs under them.

I stayed there at the end of april, my lady and I really enjoyed the resort, but the food was the absolute pits. not 5-star quality whatsoever. everything else was perfect, but we are huge food and wine buffs so that was incredibly disappointing to us. so much so that we vowed to never vacation to mexico again, but instead to real 5-stars with real food.

everything else about the hotel was 5-star, the food not so much.

Like a beer tap? Or just bottles that they re-stock?

I wouldn't leave my room if there was a tap that dispensed booze on a whim.

My advice would be to check trip advisor. I trust the reviews on that site - have always had good experiences with hotels/resorts that we researched using that site. Obviously the 5-star places get the best reviews, but I've enjoyed more "economy" places as well because I can adjust my expectations based on the trip advisor reviews.

Edited to say: most people also put their age category on their trip advisor reviews. So if a bunch of 50 - 65 year olds don't think that highly of the Riu places, but the 18-24 year olds seem to love it, you can take that into account.

Indistinguishable? Sounds like it would get you wasted!

We stayed at the Riu Vallarta in November of 2008 for two weeks. We actually had our wedding down there too, so there were 35 of us in total.

The place was absolutely amazing, staff was exceptional, and the cleanliness was unbelievable. I would recommend this place a thousand times over.
