So it was the fuel pump, just as I suspected, on my 1996 Ford Explorer.

I have a conundrum now. Should I pay $700 to have this fixed, or should I cut my losses and look at something else? My truck is probably worth around the $3,000 mark repaired.

If I don't get it repaired, I want a fairly significant upgrade. Something smaller and more fuel efficient, and newer. What say you CP? Is a $3,000 vehicle worth $700 in repairs?

Good Holy Christ man, what is that fuel pump made out of? Solid gold?

Someone get this man a cheaper fuel pump.

That Frontier is looking pretty good right now isn't it? It's already in the container ready to be shipped. Come on, take a chance.

Seriously, don't

If $700 gets you another 3 months, then it's worth it. Unless your "significant upgrade" will have a monthly payment of less than $235.

I used to own a POS Ford Explorer. A lemon is all I have to say about the Explorers.

Get rid of it and buy something reliable like a Ford Escape that i'm now driving.

It must be one of those that is actually inside the fuel tank.

I've always thought that was a brilliant design!

You are correct. It requires dropping the fuel tank and removing the fuel pump from inside the tank from the top.

So, if you don't get it fixed what are you going to do with it?

Would you sell it for scrap for a couple of hundred bucks? That wouldn't make sense, because you could spend $700 to fix it and sell it for $3000; assuming you don't get any lowball offers.

$1500? It couldn't hurt to throw that offer out there anyways. It's not like anyone would lose their mind and go on a rant or anything.

I sold my 91 Explorer to a local mechanic a few years ago. A suggestion to you ATR if you decide to sell and buy another.

Oh I know, but still. Wait, is the $700 for the whole Shabang or just the pump?

I'll give you 3 half dead goats and a sack of 'previously enjoyed' barley for it!

$700 sounds awful high even if it's inside the tank. My old Dodge Dynasty had an inney and when I got that repaired it was $250. Granted that was 10 years ago, but $700? Did you call around? And by call around, I mean did you call South Pro Automotive?

And another thing... Don't rip on Exploders. I had a '91 Exploder for years and I loved the hell out of that truck.

I bet you could get a pump cheaper from Auto Value or Part Source. Is it $700 from Fords?

Approach whoever told you it costs $700, offer $385 cash. Make sure you have your running shoes on.

Go online and buy it it will cost you alot less.

To be honest your Explorer would be lucky to get $2000 if you opted to sell it. If it's a reliable vehicle and hasn't gave you any troubles other than the fuel pump i'd fix it.

I would fix it if I were you. I just quickly googled it, and here:

http://www.car-stuff.com/store/?N=10...616+11921+9211

Around $200 for the pump. Find yourself a better deal or prepare to get your hands dirty and save $500.

I know some good mechanics if you need.

I've got a brand new fuel pump for that Explorer of yours. I'm looking for a quick sale because my vet bills are piling up. You see my puppy is sick. They think they know the problem, but he's gonna need an operation and it's costly.

I will send it to you for $100. We will use an escrow company so that we are both protected. PM me all your information. We must act fast. I do not know how much more time he has......

Please, think of the puppy.
