Hawks busy on draft day
Hawks GM Dan Julien begun the day with a trade that was rejected but didn't let that phase him.
After making every attempt to move into the top 10 of the draft and being shut down at every turn, the Hawks decided to be patient at 14, thinking they would miss out on their man and thinking about drafting Ryan Ellis...when their turn came, they were surprised to see...Nazem Kadri still available. The young superstar is a fast riser in this year's draft and we're hoping that he falls to number nine in the NHL draft and goes to a team that needs his offense.
At 18, the Hawks had already lost their two targets (Ellis and Kassian), however their number three target was still there and they drafted OHLer Calvin De Haan. The young man proved himself worthy this year, playing on the top pair and the number one power play for the Generals, he doesn't quite have the same shot as Ellis but can make things happen on the point.
There were many guys available at 28 that we had our eye on, but we took a guy who rose late on our draft board. Tim Erixon is a good swedish d-man that impressed the scouting brass with his defensive play at the WJCs.
It was always our goal with the three second rounders to acquire one goalie and one guy we had on the fringe of the first round who dropped. We did exactly this, drafting Richard Panik, a former top 10 ranked guy from Slovakia who is falling on the boards but still has plenty of talent. With the other two second rounders, we acquired two goalies, drafting Edward Pasquale at 40 and trading the 53rd for Trevor Cann. Pasquale is definitely a long term project but Cann should be closer to joining the CPHL Hawks.
