99-Year-Old's Water Bill Jumps Almost 4000% WASA: 139,876 gallons went into Northwest house
By MATTHEW STABLEY
WASHINGTON -- Stop complaining about your utility bills. Jeannette Cohen's water bill jumped almost 4000 percent.
The 99-year-old northwest Washington woman insists it must be a mistake. Usually, her water bill is $30. In March, she did a double take.
"I got my usual bill and opened the envelope and looked at the amount," she said. "Huh? I looked again."
It was $1,181.

I hate it when $hit like this happens. It seems the story always follows a pattern. Big company gives a huge bill to some poor shmoe, the bill is an obvious mistake/oversight/computer screwup, but company expects said schmoe to pay the balance in full.
It's only when the issue is brought up via the media that the company backtracks and tells everyone they will get on it right away.
THIS is how media can make themselves useful nowadays. Not reporting that Paris Hilton got a new dress or Octomom's babies are crying.
And you really got to wonder about these companies - if they really would decide to charge the old lady the full amount if the media didn't bring attention to the story.
I wish more people would call up the company in question and cancel all the services they may have with the company as a result of them picking on one old woman.
Also, while we're on the topic of cancellation, here's another way the government can make themselves useful:
Any contract that lists "cancellation fees" in the excess of two months of typical service is null and void.
