Icon41 Sharks make a few moves

First off I would like to thank everyone for the warm welcome. I am very pleased to have been given the opportunity to take over the Sharks and will do my best to keep the team competitive. My team had some serious cap issues when I started and I have done my best to address those by moving out the rights to some of my high priced help and fill the holes with players that will help immediately and in the future.

Started out with trading the rights to Hossa for Pominville and Benn plus a little cap cash with the Thrashers. Pominville had an attractive contract and will fit in nicely, Benn is an up and coming youngster.

Made a minor deal that saw me send a 5th round pick to the Canucks for AHLer Darren Reid.

Sent a third round pick to the Rangers for a good 4th liner Blair Betts

Was a busy day on the phones yesterday and was able to send some high priced help out of town and fill it with players that will be welcome additions to the Sharks

- Traded the rights to Chris Pronger plus two 2nd round picks to the Coyotes. This deal sees Trevor Daley, Adam Pardy, Blake Wheeler, and 1.5 mill in cap coming to the Sharks. With cap issues looming I had to get the most I could out of a few of my UFA and with trading Pronger's rights it gave me the best return. We are very excited to see how the players coming to the Sharks will fit in and believe they will.

-Traded Martin Havlat and a 5th rounder to the Penguins for Tomas Pelkanec and Steve Downie. Tomas had a tough season last year and hopefully he will be able to rebound in San Jose.

-Finally traded Alexander Frolov to the Avalance for Drew Stafford, Brad Marchand and Joe Finley. Salary was the issue again with Frolov, thinking a raise might be coming his way and wanting to sign a few key UFA's Frolov like Havlat had to go.

We think we have addressed our cap issues, there are a few minor deals to be made.

Good job with the Sharks so far, good to see another very active GM in San Jose!

I think the new Sharks GM has been put in the most difficult position of a new GM; he had to deal with a lot of high-end UFA's and needed to clear out a lot of cap space in order to have a decent team moving forward.

You've been able to address a lot of those issues and you got good returns on all of your players. Moving Pronger for Wheeler, Daley and Pardy are all nice pieces. Obviously you took a downgrade but Wheeler had a great rookie season and Daley continues to develop (a bit to my surprise).

Moving Frolov for Stafford and Marchand was a good move, you save some decent salary and get a player with good upside in Stafford back. Marchand is a solid prospect as well, so this move makes sense for both sides.

Moving Havlat for Plekanec + Downie is another good move for both sides. The Pens have a bit of cap room and Plekanec had a bit of a crap season but is still a solid player.

Overall, good job on all the moves...it'll help your team now and in the future.

Nah, its easier to work with assets than having no assets at all. The guys Ian had like Pronger, havlat etc. have some good value. So it wouldn't been a hard sell. But he has done a fine job of controlling his cost and maintaining high level of talent.

I think guys like Pat and Dean are doing a remarkable job, especially Pat. Both those teams were low on assets but they seem to be flipping the right guys for right return.

I'm talking about the learning curve and needing to make a lot of these deals in a very short period of time. Overall, it seems the new GM's that have come into the league recently have all been really good. Lots of activity and lots of trading...so good job to all you guys.

Yeah, it's easier to make trades when you have good players than when you don't. But chances are you see a lot more offers and the wolves are out to rob you blind too so it takes a good deal of skill to sell off those assets and maintain a good team.

So far a good job of being active and finding a way to keep the Sharks competitive. Ryan left the Sharks in great shape, but he was a very active guy and his successor was going to need to be an active GM too to keep the train on the rails. So far it's staying on the rails!
