Default Anyone else having bad packet loss on Shaw?

Getting really bad packet loss, 66%.. call Shaw, "Is your computer connected directly to the modem? Everything looks good to me.".. Um no in this day and age people have home networks, my modem is in my furnace room.

Plus I tell him my router has a different MAC address so if I put my comptuer directly on the network won't like it.. so I rewire my network to get my computer directly on the modem, and sure enough it doesn't like it, no IP.

And then he sees the same packet loss.

His solution? Wait a few days, it should clear up.

*sigh*

I kind of need it to work, so he books a service call.

*le sigh*

On the plus side, tethering on my iPhone works!

Why would the network not like your different MAC? It ain't telus.

Weird on the IP thing. In one evening I connected with my modem using its own mac address. Then I cloned my main PC's mac address onto the modem and got a different IP address. then I cloned my 2ndary PC's mac address onto the modem and got one of the previous two IP addresses I had.

You get 2 IP addresses with Shaw.

Yeah you get 2 ip's so it's supposed to be fine but for some reason it never works for me.

Still not working properly. Digital phone works fine so it's not a physical problem, gotta be a network problem.

Quite possible for the digital phone to work while your net is affected by cable problems. I had packet loss recently as well (upwards to 80%, was unuseable). Checked the signal levels then called in to see what they said. They noticed the same thing, an extremely bad signal coming in. But yet phone worked perfectly. If the signal is that bad, then your modem also won't sync which means no IP.

Photon, have you done the trick to check your own signal levels yet?

What is this trick you speak of?

Connect the modem directly to the PC. Unplug the power cable, then plug it back in. Immediately see if you can get to the 192.168.100.1 modem admin page. On it you will see the signal levels. You have to do this quickly before all 4 green lights become solid (it gets sync) cause it will lock the page (shaw prevents you from getting to it when they have their file loaded).

You'll see something similar to the 3rd post on this page: http://www.broadbandreports.com/foru...ng-config-file
Record the two power levels and SnR.

Cool, I'll have to remember that!

Things seem to be fine this morning.

I had issues on Telus last week - every few minutes I would lose connection for a minute (almost exactly). I wonder if there isn't some work on a trunk line somewhere local.

Default Sounds like a bad drop

Cable modems are extremely fussy as to their input levels. As one that used to install the old cybersurfers it is likely that the leg that your cable modem is on doesn't have adequate levels. I would have the tech come out and check your levels on the the line you have the modem on, it may also be a case of too strong of signal which would mean a quick install of an attenuator.

If I remember correctly the imput level should be 3.5dB +/- 3dB.

actually for DOCSIS modems the receive levels are good between -11 and +11 dB, while transmit should be between 34 and 54 dB

that's my modem currently. the receive and transmit levels out of whack will generally cause slow or intermittent connections, while the downstream and upstream will cause your packetloss if they're too low (below 25 dB)

if receive or transmit are out of whack, those levels will turn red and if a TSR sees that when you call it it will usually trigger a service call right there. buildings with older cable lines can also suffer from static, and if you have connection problems you can try unplugging the coax cable from the back of the modem and grounding it against something (touching metal) which often helps clear up issues temporarily
