Air Compressor Help

Hey.

I am interested in getting an air compressor. My "needs" are to blow out my sprinklers in the fall and to fill car and bicycle tires.

My "wants" are to be able to drive air tools on an as needed basis, which is admittedly quite rare. I can see using the nailers and a spray gun but realistically, this is not really a priority but if I buy something I want to be able to use it for tools in the future.

I primarily want to be able to inflate my vehicle tires relatively quickly.

I had pretty much written off the Crappy Tire ones as being under powered.

This unit however looks pretty good. Any comments or thoughts? Thanks.

If you're using it to blow out your sprinklers, I hope you have a small system. Most small air-compressors used to fill bike tires etc. don't have nearly enough pressure to properly blow out sprinklers. You can do it, but you'd have to stop about 5-6 times each zone, and even then, you wouldn't be doing it properly imo.


I've heard of people that do it, but never seen it done and as far as I know, isn't really recommended.

I was told a while ago that my 17 gallon compressor wouldn't be enough to blow out sprinkler systems. I think you'd want a huge tank; like 40-60 gallons.

FYI, this is the size of compressor we use to do blowouts. (Although it does look bigger in real life )

My buddy has one that is 1/3 hp and we do one zone at a time and it does the job. Each zone takes about 5 minutes. That compressor would be smaller than the one I am looking at. I do have a small system, just a normal residential yard. Thanks for the comments though.

Do you do all the zones at once when you do blowouts?

We'll usually do one or two zones at a time depending on the size of the zone. If it's a house in the city, no problem. An acreage in Springbank will take a lot more. That sucker could probably do almost all a residential house's zones in one swoop, but because people pay upwards of $70-80 for a blow-out, being there for 2 minutes looks bad. Also, taking your time gives you an opportunity to properly see if there are any problems, cracks or leaks in a system.

Seriously. If you want to make some quick money, rent a compressor, hook it up to your truck, plant some signs and you'll be busy.

Typically the biggest thing to look for is tank size. Although you do need probably at least 3-4 hp to fill a tank in a reasonable amount of time, the bigger the tank the better. I have a 6hp, 60 gallon tank that i bought new at home depot for $650. It runs everything you could possibly attach and more.

Not sure what you may be able to find used but as long as your not worried about it being portable get the biggest tank you can find. I know of guys that have actually used smaller compressors (2 HP) and attach a couple of larger tanks in series. Seemed to work well for them.
