So the gf and I were headed to Dinosaur Park for 5 days of camping. About 5 minutes out of Bassano on Highway 1 the car in front of my made a violent swerve, I was in the right lane and so was he, so I had to swerve to the centre line to avoid him, and when he moved out the of way I saw a deer coming at me, probably just about 6 feet in the air,its feet pointing up in the air and parallel with the windshield, if that makes sense. It wasn’t head on, it was side on. It smashed right through the windshield and its hindquarter landed on me, the head and torso landed on my gf. I managed to keep control of my car, and drove it into the ditch. I finally stopped like 40 or 50 feet from the highway, hard to judge.
We miraculously (according to the RCMP) escaped with our lives. The officer said a less experienced driver would have either spun out or rolled the car. I only have some scrapes on my arms and some bits of glass in my face. My gf, who was reading a map at the time and didn't see it coming, had to go to the hospital to get her eyes flushed out cause some glass got in them. But other than that we are fine.
Pretty crazy. If that deer hit a couple feet either way she or I would have been crushed. And quite possibly dead according to the officer. Or if I had lost control we could have died in the resulting crash.
I only got back about half an hour ago and we hit the thing at 9:30. Just thought I'd share while I have a pint of Guinness try and relax before bed.
