Default Calling upon CP infinite knowlege....

We travel the # 1 to Canmore / Banff frequently and have noticed something odd that there does not appear to be any "obvious" explanation.

There is a Petro Can on the north side of Hwy, just after the Cochrane turn off and there are always a ton of vehicles parked up and down the service road leading to it.
Doesn't matter if it is weekday, weekend, evening....all the time.

They are not vehicles sitting for sale; there is no business within walking distance that could accomodate all the people from these vehicles.

So far we (hubby and I) have two theories.

#1) There is an ongoing CP booze bash, the bus picks you up there and we have not been invited.

#2) It is near a tunnel that leads to the basement of Chicken on the Way.

Its a main stop for road trips, all the people are probably at the Petro-can....

or option #2 sounds good too.

Drive there, then ride bicycles?

There's a better story behind the building to the east across #22 from the Petro Can....

We are not talking about some patrons of the Petro Can and Humptys. Their parking lots have vehicles, with some open spaces. Yet there are another 50-100 vehicles parked along the road. It seems very strange.

At first we thought it might be a meeting place for some buses for the ski resorts, but they are there year round.

Bikers, hikers, and skiers meet there and carpool.

Thought about that too; but weekends are just as busy.

Is it those weirdos who bike from Calgary to Banff on the highway?
This is plausible; but wouldn't they all be smart cars? There are a lot of gas & diesel guzzers in the mix.

Bikers also meet at an intersection on Hwy 22, west of Spruce Meadows.

Could it be people that work on an oilsite and meet there and get bused to the nearby camp? So that no vehicles are there. That would maybe explain why is trucks and whatnot

The answer has already been addressed. It is indeed a place for people to leave their cars for the day. Be it biking, hiking, or whatever in the mountains. Or a place for people to carpool into Calgary (IE: Bragg Creek and Cochrane folks meet there to drive into Calgary). They're not all there for one specific reason.

I used to be a gas jockey at that place when I was a wee lad. Another fun tidbit: Trucker washrooms / showers are the grossest things in the world.

There are also a couple of gas plants in the vicinity - people meet there, car pool the rest of the way

Yah, I've used it myself for this reason; if you are getting together to go out West with a couple people who live in different areas of the city, it is easier just to all meet up there and take one vehicle after that. That way you don't end up being the sucker who has to get up extra early and go get everyone else, especially as someone is invariably not ready, plus if they aren't there and ready when you get to the Humpty's, you can just go in and have yourself breakfast instead of wigging out.
