Default Expo 2017 - Calgary vs Edmonton

Well this should be a fun CP thread.

The City of Calgary placed a last minute bid to represent Canada in Expo 2017 (150th anniversary of Canada) bidding.

The others with their hat in the ring? Edmonton and Hamilton.

Bring it on, bozos up North!

You can have it. From what I understand, it's rather expensive to host. I see no reason for Edmonton to want it. And I'd be all for Calgary getting it over Edmonton, but then that would probably still cost me taxes provincially.

Go Hamilton!

Hell no. Edmonton needs it. We can wreck that waste of space Municipal airport and convert into something useful when Expo is done.

And we could call our baseball team the Expos.

This is just an absolute BS bush league stunt by our egotistical Mayor.....
Edmonton has been working on thier submission for months now, and at the very last minute Calgary throws its hat into the ring?? wtf??
We should be backing Edmonton in its bid, not jeopordizing it!!
I read an article a few days back that there is funding allowed for every bid, and this is just a pure cash grab by that dic*head Bronco Billy....
When Calgary was bidding on an earlier Expo, Edmonton threw its support firmly behind calgary and its bid....what do we do? try to fu** em over....niiiice

How does it impact Edmonton's bid at all? It puts another opponent in the running, but it doesn't screw over Edmonton. The way I look at it if a bid thrown in at the last minute is a concern to a group who has been at it for months those months of work were pretty poor.

I'm pretty sure the world has seen mullets, malls and losers before, so what has Edmonton got left to offer?

Calgary wins this is a cakewalk.

It totally screws over edmonton.....they already have a theme, a nice little jingle, you know, actual plans...Calgary has nada, zip zilch.....but we did cut a cheque for almost 1/2 million to be considered....good thing the city council raised my tax rates to cover this bid that is destined to fail..
By putting calgary in competition with Edmonton, who has actually spent months working on their submission, it hurts their chances. The culture minister of Alberta would have a choice of either funding both bids (at around 1.5 mill a pop) or refusing to fund either....
If calgary actually had a plan and put some forethought into this, I would be all for it....but plain and simple we dont..

The 2010 Expo here in Shanghai is going to be awesome and I am highly anticipating it. The work being done for it is phenomenal, and the city is expecting 70 million visitors over a six month period.

Check out some of the cool stuff going on:
http://en.expo2010.cn/

Obviously no place in Canada is going to rival the Shanghai one, but it could still be cool for either city.

Expo '86 was kind of cool, but I agree with everything lucky1 is saying and while I doubt this can all be pinned on Bronco, I can't wait until the next round of municipal elections.

From what I know, there's not a snowball's chance in Hell that Calgary even get remotely close to winning this. And Edmonton will not saddle up with Calgary on this bid. It's not happening.

Really. Does anyone know anyone who has actually planned in advance to attend an Expo? People plan ahead to attend the Olympics. People plan ahead to attend the World Cup. But the World's Fair/Exposition?

Unless there are plans to upgrade or replace the dump known as McMahan Stadium, Calgary doesnt have a chance.

Why? Outside of 2 or 3 times in the last decade, when has Calgary ever replaced an incumbent?

Remember How Stelmach was going to get a message?

I am definitely planning ahead to attend the Expo in Shanghai. I've no doubt I'll be coming back to the city for that. I expect this city to be done up like crazy during Expo. It should be a blast.

Yes. Attendance at Expo 86 was a planned event for me. It's just as good an excuse to go visit a city as The Olympics or other sporting event are.
