Unlocking your car with your cell phone (if keys are locked inside)
I got this in an email with tips on cell phones:
If you lock your keys In the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home ontheir cell phone from your cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other 'remote' for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk).
Anyone have any idea if this is true or possible?
If so it's not a bad tip.

How could anybody possibly believe this is true? That is beyond the stupidest thing I've ever read.

Ugh. People like that just don't have any kind of grasp on technology.

While it is an urban legend I'd be shocked if we don't see a way to unlock your car with your phone in the next 3 years.

It's already here (see On-Star for example). They can unlock your vehicle for you via cell network and data connection. It just needs to be adapted and the only reason they haven't probably is because the cost outweights the benefits.

We'll all be better once the older generation dies off and the younger generation who doesn't believe or buy anything in chain e-mails takes over. Seriously, my parents fall for this crap on a daily basis.
BTW, the one thing that does work - hold up your lock/unlock key fob and touch your head with it. It will increase the effective radio range.

Yep I do this all the time. Just tap it under my chin and click while I walk away. Probably adds another 40 feet I'd say.

the remotes that all cars come with now has totally ended my fear of locking my keys in the car. I always lock the car with the remote when I'm already outside the car. Therefore, I can't lock my keys in the car.
