Default The red ring...

... of death.

I suppose overall, I've been pretty lucky. I got my Xbox 360 for Christmas three years ago and have had exactly zero problems with it, until this afternoon.

So, a question for those out there that may or may not have experienced this before. Shall I bother trying to get it repaired by Microsoft or should I just bite the bullet and go buy a new one? If I do buy a new one, how do I get the crap off the hard drive of the old one onto the new one? Is it possible?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Stupid Microsoft...

I'm totally kicking myself for getting an XBox over a PS3 in June, I seriously had never heard of the Red Ring of Death until a month after the purchase.

Sorry, I dont have an answer, as luckily it hasnt happened to me yet. Rather I just have another question for whoever replies to this thread. In the last couple weeks my XBox has been revving alot louder than usual. Is this the first step in what results in a broken XBox?

Mine wasn't doing any 'revving' that I recall, but for the first time ever it had begun to just hang in the middle of games (usually NHL 09, but that could certainly be influenced by the fact I play it about 10 times more than all my other games put together). Had to turn the thing off and on again to get it to restart.

Definitely do not go get a new one. Those can have problems too... my sisters bf got an Elite for Christmas last year, and three weeks ago, he had the red rings. Just send it away and wait for it to be returned. Microsoft won't feel the pinch until the next new systems come out, but don't give them more of your cash.

You can ask for a free cable to transfer your stuff from your old drive to your new one.

Phone M$, get it repaired. You will get a new one, not your old one repaired. The new one you get will have all the new stuff in it. I am on my 5th, but this one has lasted pretty long so far and I have had no problems.

yup, call and get it repaired. They'll ask you to send it off without the hard drive (and some times the face plate) so you keep that stuff. They'll send you a new one and you can just use your old hard drive.

Mine red ringed over the the summer. Didn't bother me though because I've had to replace a ps1,ps2 and ps3 before so they get a one time pass. If it breaks again however...

If it's three years ago you might be S-O-L... Microsoft covers red ring of death for three years from the time of purchase. Call them and check, if not, just go pick up one of the $200 Arcade models, pop your hard drive off and throw it on there. Tadah!

Even then it will probably be replaced. Basically if it's three red rings, MS will replace it.

If you've never registered your console the three year warrenty hasn't started. It will when you register.

Weird, I just had my year old one with the supposedly new chipset RROD on me. Luckily still on warranty for another few weeks. I noticed the same thing, started to hang on games, then bam, three red rings next time I tried to turn it on.

I've actually seen a few of these for sale in the last week, so maybe a batch suddenly crapped the bed?

Was thinking of the Elite option as well, but also don't want to give any more $ to MS

I am on my second one.

I bought a blue ray player this summer (actually my wife bought it for me for my birthday) and I am kicking myself for not asking her to get me a PS3 instead.

Oh well, here is hoping it lives til the next generation of systems comes out.

So will M$ replace it for free, even though it is 3 years old? I thought I read somewhere that it would cost me $175 plus shipping, which is why I was leaning towards the new one...

Call microsoft, tell them you got the 3 red rings, give them your info and they'll tell you if it is going to be fixed. If they tell you it'll cost money question them as to why. If you bought it and have it registered, and have been the owner the whole time they should fix it.

They'll email you a shipping slip which you print off. You can box your Xbox yourself, but I let the UPS store do it for me for about $5. Make sure you don't include any custom faceplates, your hard drive or any games with the Xbox because they won't be sending the same one back.

It'll take anywhere from 3 weeks to a little over a month to get your new (refurbished) Xbox back.

Anyone here had the "open tray" error? For a few months the xbox won't read the disc unless i open and close it a bunch of times. Sometimes it does read the disc, but it tells me to "insert this disc into an xbox 360 console".

I've had the unreadable disc error, which is an easy fix, but not the open tray error.

1) put a disc that you don't care about into your x-box.

2) take a piece of stiff paper (card, post card) slide it into the drive above the disc.

3) move it back and forth above the disc and below the magnet

4) remove disc

5) put in different game disc.

6) should work.

5th? And you haven't given up and switched to ps3 yet? I've had one, and it was such a pain to deal with in my case, it took about 2 months to get it back. I'm already considering selling the thing. If I have another red ring there's no way I'll stick with the 360.

My instinct was to say thanks. Then I realized it was Captain and now I am wondering if this is one of his answers that should not be followed. Example: Q. my nose is itchy. Captain Answer: Hit yourself in the face with a shovel.

Now I am concerned.

My Xbox's have had major problems, but the latest one has lasted two plus years. And I would take more issues versus only having a PS3...the 360 is a much better video game system.
